Gen-turi on portable inverter generator?

All,

Just getting into the portable generator thing, and getting educated. I see the Camco Gen-turi which appears to be geared primarily to the RV's with built-in generators.

I just bought a Champion Inverter 75537i for the occasional off-grid camping/tailgating, etc. My generator wont be attached to, or in any compartment in/on my RV when in use.

Has anyone come up with some kind of gen-turi for portable generator use? Is it even needed? If I just keep my generator a distance away from my RV, is that enough? If you do, how do you attach to a portable generator?

I just want to learn the safe practices.

thanks, Dave

I have the same champion inverter generator. Was anyone able to find a bolt on solution?

Yea, and by extension, I am talking about a 2-3" extension, long enough to connect a gen-turi to it.

UPDATE: I found more photo's from the guy that did the mod already.

I don't like his implementation of the bolt through the 1/2" threaded pipe, as that would be a restriction. However, It looks like I might be able to figure something out from this information. Maybe even a bolt-on extension.

As long as there is an air gap, no restriction, no problem.

with that "gutter mod" it has to be convection, there is NO venturi effect..

but as long as it works,, thats what counts
I can explain it to you.
But I Can Not understand it for you !

I think the effect is more convection than venturi.

I think the gen-turi is good for both your own rv and your neighbors. with a built-in you are locked in with the exhaust location. if you happen to be blowing into the wind, it could come back into your own RV.

Hmmm ... I thought the main purpose of the Gen-Turi was to keep your generator fumes from bothering your neighbor in somewhat cramped RV camping situations.

Our built-in generator has never caused any fume smells or carbon monoxide alarms inside our RV. I believe that built-in generator installation guidelines manufacturers are to use are specifically designed to ensure that the exhaust is nicely projected outwards for dissipation away from the coach where the generator is located. Perhaps some RV manufactures do skimp on these requirements, however.

Here's a quote from Camco describing what a Gen-Turi installation is intented for:

"Close quarters at rallies and tailgate parties create a need for noise and exhaust fume reduction. Gen-turi diverts nasty fumes away from the ground, where they will not be inhaled by neighboring RVers. Be a good neighbor, vent generator exhaust above the roof line while reducing noise."

Boy, this is a real headscratcher. Cant believe I am the first one to want to do this on RV's most popular forums? I did find a photo where someone did it, but no links to the person that did it.

Champion with gen-turi

I will probably have to pull the muffler off, and have someone weld some pipe onto it the way it looks.

Hi Dave,
I have a venturi-type exhaust system on my EU2000i, it works great. Below are a few pics of what I did.
You're on your own for sorting out how to do it safely with your Champion generator.
Cheers

I dont know that official gen-turi from camco could be adapted to work on a portable gen either?

whatever works.

but there sure isn't any restriction in that gutter assembly to increase speed and lift

But is your gen a portable, or built-in to your RV with a tailpipe? I'm still trying to figure out with parts from lowes, or wherever, how to connect a elbow to the exhaust pipe where there really isnt one today(or very short).
