My A/C is to old and they don't make replacement capacitors?

MY 1997 Damon Intruder 32 FT class A had the rear A/C unit stop working. It doesn't come on but the fan function works fine. I think the start capacitor has failed. Every shop wants to sell me a new A/C unit and tell me that they don't make capacitors for the Coleman that old. Anyone know how I cam find a proper replacement ?

Sounds like our Coleman Mach 15! Cold, but I describe its two speeds as Extremely Loud and Louder Still.

What is the brand of the units?
Our front heat pump is only 13,500 and both are Coleman.
No problems now but did have to replace a capacitor, and sued a higher rated cap.
And recently fan slid down shaft of the rear 15,000 unit and ground itself into base plate. Coleman repaired it.
Front unit quiet but the rear is like a Chinnook engine spooling up but boy does it through out cold air.

I ended up having to replace the A/C unit but I hope that other guys will see the postings here and it will help them save a lot of money.A RV dealer wanted $1300 to replace the A/C unit in the rear. I bought two new modern and way more efficient units that draw way less power. I got the two unit with the low ceiling assemblies that have remotes/wall mount controls and renewed three years of Good Sam. All for $1800.12.

Set VOM to Ohms. First Take a picture before you remove all connections of cap to be tested. Then short across the tabs with a screwdriver to discharge the cap. (voltage can be lethal!) Touch and hold capacitor tabs with meter leads and hold for several seconds while observing the meter. If nothing happens after 10-20 seconds, reverse the leads and repeat. If the meter starts counting up, wait till it stops, then reverse the leads and it should do the same thing each time you reverse the leads. If it does, cap is likely ok. If cap is bulged on top or in any way deformed, replace it. Google how to test capacitor if this isn't clear enough.
Thanks for the help. It looks like the Capacitor is good so I am going to replace the unit because of the age of the motorhome I will replace both front and rear units and be done with it.

LOL. Not laughing at you brother, laughing with you. Been there done that. While you are doing all this also check each grill outlet. The tape will deteriorate and let cool air leak into the roof cavity. You should also get better efficiency/performance compared to the old unit. Be sure the divider is taped in place well. I have mistakenly bought cheap aluminum tape but also found better stuff. If you need aluminum tape an ac supply house may sell the best quality.

The big one (47-56uF) is probably the compressor start cap. The others may be start and run caps for the fan.

Again, if your compressor isn't humming and trying to start, changing the cap won't help.

They still make 'em they just dont' make 'em for Coleman any more

As someone said look at what is printed Here are some things to consider

It will show a capacity (Farads or to be more precise Microfarads may say uF)

it will show a Voltage

Get one with AT LEAST that voltage, but not more than 2x the voltage

and try to get w2ithn 10% on the uF.. 20% should work but 10% is better.

Also check to see if a "Soft Start" kit is made for that unit... It will work too.

Did you try anyrvparts.com 800-237-4318 ? I had a 1985 coachman and i called them on different occasions for different items that i could find nowhere and they had them. They have a dinosaur department that they found my parts. It's worth a try.Hope this helps

Before you even guess at buying any capacitor go to an ac supply house and they will usually test it for you. If you do have to replace the ac unit it isn't all bad. New ones are usually more efficient, quieter and lower profile. You dont necessarily need a new inner grill either depending on models.

When my compressor conked out I was ticked and thinking here goes $600 more dollars but in the end I was impressed at how well the new one works. No, I wouldn't just replace it to get this better performance but it did lessen the pain. I was going to buy on line but the guys at CW said I didn't need the new grill which saved me $125 so I bought the ac unit at CW in Lake City Fl. Great store.

Find out where the local residential AC guys buy their parts from. You will find a capacitor there. Bring the old one in and they will match it.

If nothing else, there are hard start kits that replace the OEM capacitor and lower the starting load as well.
