I just had similar issues a couple of weeks ago. I went through EVERYTHING myself, the truck plug the wiring from the rear plugs to the cab. Couldn't find anything on the truck, started looking at trailer, brakes and magnet connections, still couldn't find anything so I decided to take it to an RV shop. They "looked" the trailer over, readjusted my brakes and gave it back to me. A week later same thing as you, the dreaded "OL" and "SH" (again)! Took the trailer back (again) to the RV shop, this time they wanted to "re-check" the truck too. STILL couldn't "find" anything but they mentioned to me I need to quit turning up the brake controller, I hadn't messed with it at all. Bottom line they put a new Prodigy 2 controller in like the one I had EXCEPT this one wasn't defective!! We're on week two of our 5 week adventure, right now in Missoula MT and NO controller issues!!!!!
I'm not saying your's is shot but after all the "checking" it was the controller after all. Good luck to you. Safe travels.
tks, i will check this too, i just recently removed hubs and packed bearing, may have cause something doing this ? keep any input coming, i am out of town and will be late next week before i can check.
i do know the S H is not there when not hooked to my 5ver, and not there hooked to another trailer.
I found a short inside one of the brake housings. The electric magnet had fallen off its perch and allowed the positive feed wire to rub through the insulation on the wheel, giving intermittant shorts.
Lots of ways a wire can go to ground on these systems.
Start with an ohmmeter at the 7 way on the trailer. Check the blue wire which is #2. It should be about 1 ohm to ground the #1 white wire. If it is less then look and see if the wiring at the axles have scotchlock connectors. If it does remove them and check for grounds on each wire. Only the white wire comming from the pin box should be ground. All the others now should show infinity to ground. Use a good waterproof crimp connector when you remake the connections. I have found a heat shrink solderless connector made by 3M at wallmart.
1st. disconnect the trailer to isolate the SH. If SH remains when trailer is disconnected you have a short somewhere within the prodigy and vehicle wiring. if no SH when trailer is disconnected then plug the trailer in and check, if SH shows then you have a short either in the connection at the Vehicle and Trailer or a short in the trailer most likely the brake wiring where it runs along the frame and axles.
Yes, the wire that runs through the axle can eventually wear through it's insulation as it moves around in it. This is probably the most common place for a short. In fact I think mine is starting to do it. ๐
