Automobile alternators put out from 60 to 180 amp, and charge the batteries fairly heavy after a normal start. Does your friend remove the caps on his car batteries when he is driving? Or a golf cart when it is charging, or a electric man lift when it is plugged in, or anything else with batteries with removable caps?
The caps are vented.
