Roof top airconditioner

Does anyone know if a Airxcel Series 48000 air conditioner can be converted to being controlled with a thermostat? Currently the unit is either on or off. If a thermostat can be installed what are the requirements for the thermostat?

Sure. Install a Residential Wall T'Stat supplied by a Transformer that matches the Energize Coil of a heavy duty Relay. Wire the Contact side of the Relay into the Power Source of the A/C. Set the Fan Knob to High or Low Cool. Then turn the Temp Knob all the ay to MAX. It'll run when the new 'Stat tells it to and shut down when the 'Stat is satisfied.

will i'm sure than can be done, BUT it will take some "re-wiring" of the roof top A/C, you will need to install a motor control "contactor/relay" in the main power input circuit inside the A/C

but i don't see how that will help control humidity,
and it will definitely create More power surge, every time the A/C cycles on

OK here is my problem. The air-conditioner is a roof top unit with 2 nob controls. 1 nob controls the temperature and the other turns the unit on and controls the fan speed. The ac unit cycles to cool but the fan runs continually. What I'm trying to accomplish is a way to control the entire unit from a wall thermostat that will turn the entire unit on at a given temperature and shuts off the entire unit when the temperature is reached.

do you mean, you need to try and control the humidity while parked in the south, the humidity is higher in the summer than in the winter
i don't understand how a wall stat will control the humidity any better than the one on the roof unit
either the compressor is running or it isn't, the location of the stat will not affect the humidity level

IF the A/C can not remove enough humidity from the air, then you will need to get a de-humidefier to do so

I'd like to know how to do this as well. I had the single thermostat to control the heat and a/c in my 5th wheel. I'd like to be able to control everything from the single thermostat instead of the separate controls on the a/c.

I remain perplexed at the question, at what OP is trying to accomplish.

It's a Coleman Rooftop, not ducted? With Controls on the Unit? That's what we have. Two knobs. One Knob is OFF, Low Fan, High Fan, Low Cool, High Cool. When it's in "Cool" the Second Knob is Temperature. Fan runs in its Low or High setting and Compressor cycles.

Just trying to figure out what's wrong with that and what OP wants to change. If he wants the Fan to cycle WITH the Compressor (totally OFF when Second Knob doesn't call for cooling, there's a thread here where somebody did that with a Relay. I think, though, that temperature sensing would be erratic with the Fan Off.

Then others have not wanted the Compressor and Fan to start in unison on other A/C's because of the two start demands thrown onto the generator at once. They've added an electronic delay to let the Compressor start first and kick the Fan on a couple seconds later.

At least for me, I'd need more info to try and understand the current status and the desired outcome.

There might be an easier way.. In my Sticks and Bricks I once used a window air with a broken T-Stat, it was on or off, if it was on it would cool you to meat locker level even if the temp setting was fairly high.

A device which I THINK was called "Cool-Jack" was thus plugged into the wall, and the A/C plugged into it.. IT was a plug in T-stat

Find the power line, install plug and socket, instell above device betwen them job done..

You can also get hard wired 120 volt Thermostats. GOOGLE is your friend.

Thanks Dougrainer, Yes it is a roof top unit. I'm trying to see if I can wire in a remote Thermostat on the wall to control the air conditioner. Do you know if I can install a 110 thermostat that turns the unit on and off and leave the cool control set in the coldest position? We are traveling to the South and need to control the humidity in the trailer.

I don't know the answer, but if you contact RVP (Airxcel) they will likely be able to answer your question. I emailed them on a replacement part number and received a thorough answer within 24 hrs. In my book that is good service in the RV industry!

A new upper control board for the model wall tstat AND the wall tstat and then you run the tstat wire harness(6 or 8 wire tstat wire). Your AC should have a tstat already, but I guess you have roof mount controls(knobs) and want the Fan to shut off when the compressor shuts off. The roof top multiplug will fit the RVP control board. Doug
