stopped by tool town today and they had a 2200/1800 watt generator for $579 or so that could be paralleled. the clerk claimed they were quiet. the Home Depot ad was $599 and claimed that they were "quieter than a conversation". ๐Ÿ™‚

When I was choosing our new generator earlier this year, I found you tube very helpful. There you can find videos of the various generators running, DB comparisons, etc. After watching one video comparing the Honda 2000 to the Champion 2000, the Honda easily started a saw while running two fans while the Champ barely got the saw started while off eco mode and overloaded when the guy tried to start the saw again. So I'd have to agree with the above on the Champion.

I don't know the DB level of the Ryobi but the videos make it sound rougher than either the Champ or Honda. In contrast, Eco-worthy released a 2000w inverter model without a eco mode. It sounds like I started one of my RC planes and left it at half throttle. It's not as good as first hand experience but better than just reading DB stats in the specs.

Where are they under $579?

Costco, but....
The champion has just about zero surge ability, and no ability to run things with a wonky power factor. I have had 3 of these in our family, 2 have the "upgraded" modules, and none of them will start a basic WFCO 8955 converter with a pair of batteries below 50%.
If we disconnect the batteries, fire up the converter, connect the first battery, and then the second, it runs, but not on economy. If the batteries are below 50%, connecting 2 after doing the whole ridiculous disconnect procedure still trips the overload on the generator. All 3 were pretty much identical in this regard.

And don't anyone start by suggesting that there were other loads. EVERY breaker off, 2 campers, 3 gens, 5 different modules. It's just the way it is. Thanks goodness for Costco's good return policy.

If and when one of our champ 2000's decides it is going to work, usually by delayed reconnection of the batteries, it won't do it on economy, and it is not all that quiet on normal. In fact, my dad had a fellow camper go ape on him.
My current Champion 1200/1500 watt gen is far less disappointing. Even counting it cooking it's AVR in the middle of my wife's last week of holiday camping......

Not sure about new but I believe you can get refurbished units for $399 at supergen. Most of the used ones you see on CL are $400 so at least you get some type of warranty with the refurbished.

Sure... Probably upper 70-s to low 80-s if closer than 25ft. Everybody's hearing is different, but upper 70-s is what many consider "annoyingly loud", IIRC.

so it is noticeably quieter 63 vs 68 and cheaper than the champion?

Quieter but not cheaper. The 3500/4000 goes for less than $300 and we paid $425 for electric remote start with wheels and handle.

You can measure noise level as close or as far as you like. I doubt that anybody has his generator - in a temporary weekend setting anyway - farther than 15-20ft from trailer.
There HAS to be a standard measure for comparison purposes.. You can put yours wherever you want. under your bedroom window if it suits you.

As we used to say in the computer field, "Standards are great - everyone should have them".

Actually I ran a number of sound test on the older 3500/4000 we had from different distances and positions. At 21 feet it was pretty constant at 68 DB. Double the distance and you drop to the low 50s. Double that again and you can hear a near by bird sing. By then the DB app was reading 35-40 DB and a bird call, some wind in the trees and even a jet overhead would peak the meter above the generator noise. So at 100 feet it isn't obnoxious but it is still very annoying.

Doesn't the Royobi have a eco switch? It's pretty unfair to champion one generator because of how quiet it is while in ECO mode and then only deal with the full load noise of another.

man those 2000i"s are springing up like mushrooms.

i was wondering down the isle in Costco the other day and they had a "red" one on the shelf that advertized a yammy motor.

63db for an inverter generator is terrible!

heck, the open-framed Champion non-inverter generator is only 4-5db louder.

a decent inverter generator should have a db rating in the 50's.
