**** Toilet leak *****

We have been fulltiming for 4 yrs. now. There has been times the water in the bowl has leaked out. I have cleaned the rubber gasket different times and have solved the problem. This time it doesn't seem to be working. My question is do you replace the rubber gasket or just throw another toilet in?

I took the seal out and scraped the calcium deposits off. Worked fine, it has now been about 4 years and still going strong.

As others have said, its not difficult but it is messy.

Try putting some CLR in the bowl and let is soak for a couple of hours first.....I just did this and it worked.....It might save you some time & $.

One thing to help keep the bowl seal pliable is to coat it with plumbers grease, vegetable oil or olive oil......rub it in flexing the seal with your fingers.

No vaseline/petroleum jelly etc.....petroleum products will deteriorate the seal

Not a hard job, just not pleasant. I recommend silicone plumber's grease on all the moving parts when you put it back together. Once the rubber seal gets scored and stretched, there isn't much to do but replace it.

Good advice...but to remove them you have to remove the toilet. Might as well replace the seal with a new kit. Very inexpensive.... I think the kit was about $10 for my toilet. Just have to know the make and model of your unit.

I did ours. The seal kit comes with detailed instructions..basic tools and a little time + rubber gloves. Once out, I gave the whole toilet a good clean up and lube.

CLR will remove the mineral build up on the blade and seal. remove them, clean them up and it should be good for several more years.

I just rebuilt my toilet for the same reason, it is 16 years old. You have to take the toilet out. I replaced the Blade, Blade Seal, and floor seal. To reassemble toilet you need some, I think Poly Brutal sealant. I got it at ACE Hardware. Not to bad a project. Once I got the toilet apart I saw why it was leaking, the minerals in the water put like a crust on the seal over time and the blade will no longer seal.
