Transfer Switch WFCO T-57 ??

I just installed a T-57. Incoming 50 amp shore power thru surge protector to the T-57 transfer switch. Black to L1- Red to L-2 on the T-57. Works great when on shore power.
On the generator side , white to neutral, gr to gr, black (HOT) lead to L2, since that's the only side of panel I want to power.
Doesn't work. Won't transfer. The only way I can get it to work is a jumper on the gen side between L1 & L2.
Does L1 have to be powered first before the switch will work?
They state it's either 30-50 amp, but 30 amp would only use one side.

You may be correct. I was describing the markings on the T57 transfer switch. And it is Generator L1-L2-N-AUX. Sorry for the confusion.

The main reason I don't want to power one side, it has- Water Heater-AC-Convertor & some outlets, things that are not used while using the 2000w inverter. I wanted the converter off while using the inverter/charger/generator. I use a Honda 2000 mainly to recharge batteries.

This is the first mention of an inverter. You kept saying "generator." That particular detail would have aided those trying to help.

Yes I could power both sides. Then while using the inverter, I'd have to either--turn the Convertor circuit breaker off or install a relay. You don't want to run both at the same time.

I can't help wondering what the downside is for powering both sides. You don't have to USE the other side.

Make sure the converter or charging system is on L1 too.

Thanks for the replies. I really only need one side powered while boondocking. TV, coffee pot & maybe Microwave. I'll try using L1 only on the Generator side and see what happens.

The switch coil is just 120v and comes off L1. Besides you want all of your RV powered right? It is proper to bond L1 & L2 at the transfer switch on the generator side so everything works

It would appear that it is so. Swap L1 and L2 on the output and connect the generator to L1 and you should be good to go. (I must admit I do not really understand why you would not want to power both legs from the generator, rather than leaving one dead, but I suppose you have your reasons.)
