I have a weber q that works fine off of the trow away propane bottles but when i try to hook the adapter up to use the 20lb bottle it will not work. The grill does not even smell like the propane is in there when hooked to 20lb tank.

Check the hose end that replaces the disposable fitting. What happens is the pin on the Weber regulator is to short and doesn't depress the schader valve in hose enough to release the gas from the hose fitting. This happens on both the generic and weber hoses. I used a tire schrader valve tool and removed the valve completely to eliminate this issue. Unfortunate but Weber would not let me talk to engineering and only their bubbly customer service rep spewing responses from a trouble shooting flow chart about opening the valve slowly and sequence blah blah stuff was as far as they would go.

That's a common problem & usually misdiagnosed as evidenced by the other responses. Also, the Acme fitting on the hose may not depress the tank valve enough. I have had tanks that I have installed a Retro Q Cylinder Valve Adapter which solved that problem.

I've never heard that. Didn't know they made such filters.

X3, like everybody else said, the problem is with the hose/tank/etc, not the Q.

All modern tanks have that internal afety valve that can restrict flow.

BINGO!

If you turn the valve on any other way than VEERRRRYY SLOOWWLLY, the flow limiter kicks in and shuts the flow down to next to nothing.
The Weber valve needs to be off, then turn the tank valve VERY SLOWLY. Then I turn the Weber valve to low. Light it, let the flow stabilize, then turn it up. Some tanks are worse than others. If it kicks in, you need to take the hose off the tank with the Weber valve open to bleed it off, let the tank set 5-10 minutes and start over. My propane fireplace does it too.

X2 used mine several times with an aftermarket hose. Sometimes good, sometimes not so good. All problems went away after using Weber hose.
