Last week I bought this 1976 Ford F-250 4-wd, gratefully it isn't a highboy. I really think I stole it after searching for another truck.
Body and paint a bit rough but very little to almost no rust.
Once I put my camper on my other truck I no longer have a PU. I've only taken the camper off of my truck once since March and I'll be using thru the end of November.
The truck needs a lot. Its been sitting outside for nearly 20 years. Started and driven a few miles about once a year.
It has a 390 2-bbl out of 1966 Mercury Monterey. Runs pretty good after giving it a tuneup.
Replaced a bunch of stuff like the grill, battery tray, dash pad, seat cover, brake/clutch pedal pads and some other misc stuff. Still have lots to go.
My new tires arrived Monday so I took some steel wool to the Dodge chrome wheels and then had the tires mounted and balanced.
I like it. :B

My 1500 dual cab 4x I'd 5300-5400 empty per GM.
I'm generally 5700-5800 including my phat arse coming out of the dump. I have a factory gvw of 7200.
A few lighter trucks around.

When I took it to the scale to weigh I took the old highway and took the freeway home.
I kept it at 65 mph on the freeway. I'm sure its the first time in a LONG time its seen a freeway.
In 70 miles it spit out 2-3 qts of oil out through the front intake manifold gasket.
Gaskets and valve stem seals on their way.
My place is starting to look like a parts store.
I can't wait until its not a Fix Or Repair Daily truck. 😉

They were a lot lighter than today's trucks for sure. But then there wasn't much to them.
My 2011 Chevy 2500HD regular cab 6.0 gasser 4-wd weighs 6580 lbs empty.

Z-rod is a bit pricey for me, nearly 3 times what I paid for the Valvoline.
The engine is old and tired and when everything else has been fixed I'll be looking for another 390 to rebuilt. One that wont require zinc.

Right? All the fancy chit, crew cabs, etc really add up.
What gets me is the old trucks are so much lighter, yet the sheet metal is so much thicker.
Cripes, the hood on our 2016 Ram looks like it's made of cellophane, when driving down the highway. I'd gladly add a few hundred lbs in sheetmetal and real bumpers, compared to today's trucks.
But credit where credit is due, a good portion of weight in the newer trucks comes from much stiffer chassis, bigger better axles, bigger brakes, etc, compared to the old iron.

Those older trucks are definitely light compared to today. I used to have a '72 F100 2WD with a GVWR of just 5000 lbs, not much more than an empty, stripped down F150 today. Empty and from the factory it had to weigh under 4000.

I just took it across the scales this afternoon.
Myself, a full tank of gas and two spare tires in the bed weigh roughly 400 pounds making the truck about 5000 lbs dry.
The truck also has an aftermarket auxiliary gas tank but it is empty so it might not even weigh 5000 lbs from the factory.
So with a 7700 lb GVW rating it is capable of carrying around 2300 lbs.
Its kind of a light weight for a 3/4 ton truck. 😉

Been there done that in my other truck. Never had an issue with the t-case. Sometimes you just end up in one of those situations and you do the best you can. 🙂

I had a 64 Dodge Power Wagon that would do that , I'd be coming off a steep road in granny, and the transfer case would jump out of low range . It would be pretty exciting keeping it slowed down . 🙂

Bought some oil while I was in Salt Lake yesterday.
I was hoping to find some blended oil with zinc but no luck this time.
New shocks, front brake pads and new u-joints for the two front drive axles arrived yesterday.
I took it out and was pushing it pretty hard in 3rd gear low range and it kept popping out of low range.
It looks like the transfer case is due for an OH.
All I need now is some time to work on it.

Thanks. For now with everything being new I'm good with just one clamp.
I'll keep spares in this tool box that will go in the bed.
This is where I'll keep my hi-lift hack, pintle hitch, tow chain, recovery strap, tire chains and other miscellaneous stuff.
