18" tire question - ANOTHER UPDATE

specta

Was in this forum where someone was taking about 18' tires with a 4000lb load rating??

Trying to find them.

UPDATE BELOW

The pick up some nice size ricks between the lugs when you leave the pavement and when you're back on the road they can bang pretty loud when they hit inside the fenderwell.

Other than that so far so good. 🙂

Yeah, they do.
265-70
275-65
275-70
All heavy LT load rating.

Also make the Toyo M55 in your sizes (not the M655, that's the 19.5" med duty tire line).
Not sure where you're researching, but the sizes you are planning are super common sizes.

Three-peak mountain snowflake or specific winter tires are important to me and not because of the snow cops. 😉

LOL, same here! Guess after you live, work, drive, play in snow for long enough, it's just another day, but with people going 30mph!!

Thanks. Now I have another tire to look at. LOL

Speaking for both the Toyo AT3s and Nitto Terra Graps, both are GREAT in the snow.
The Toyos I had siped as well and they were the bomb on the wet greasy snow we get here. They also wore like iron (on a half ton) and were the light duty version not the LR E's.
Nittos, IMO are a better value. Similar traction, albeit a bit louder on the road. Not loud like mudders, you just know they're there. Only had 1 set and traded up trucks, but with about 15k miles, they showed little wear.
Performance for an AT tire and Value, I'd get Nitto Terra Grapplers.

The cross over AT/MT tires like the Toyo RT and Nitto Ridge Grappler are sort of the worst combo of AT and MT tire designs. I've had both now and wouldn't recommend them for virtually any conditions.
They're loud almost like mudders yet the tread blocks are bigger than mudders with very little siping and less void space. So they don't grip like AT's and don't grab "terrain" like MTs.
Just throwing tht out there.

I have those on my truck and like them. They were the only ones that bumped up my LI from stock 121 to 126 by only going fro a 265 to a 285 (in a 17" rim.)

Soft compound though, got only about 40K miles (mostly truck on miles) and am on my second set now.

You would think that I'm a politician because I keep flip flopping on tires.

Today I'm leaning towards the Toyo Open Country tires size 265/70R18.

They are rated for 3525 lbs and they only have 11 fewer revs per mile than my current tires or 1/2" taller and they have the three-peak mountain snowflake rating.

Softer rubber means better traction so I'm good with that. And I'm good with 40,000 miles out of a set of tires too.

Are the Oregun snow cops that ambitious for this actually to be a thing?

I care about my and everyone else's safety when going over snowy passes, and that the M+S and SnowPeak ratings are helpful.

To date I have pulled 3 vehicles out of snowy ditches in the Oregon Cascades, and none had even M+S rated tires. During extreme snow events, especially on I5's Siskiyou Pass, the snow cops often check because it's typically people without the right tires that cause the passes to close down for a few hours each season.

If you haven’t already pulled the trigger, also take a look at Toyo M655 which are 3 Peak rated. Yes, I have 19.5s, but I was shocked how well they ride while being agressive and high speed rated.

So I've been shopping tires and pretty much had my mind set on these Toyo Open Country A/T III tires.

I have been both impressed and very pleased with the winter performance of my current Michelin Agilis CrossClimate tires so I'm going with another set.
