1971 Aladdin Car-Pet

I recently purchased a 1971 Aladdin Trailer that is in perfect condition. Took it out a few times already and it is awesome! Only thing is there is no grey water tank. I went to Ace hardware and bought a gutter extension that diverts water away from gutters. Works great however I was told dumping grey water is illegal? All it is is the water from sink and shower. Maybe I will just dump it into a bucket next time. Forest service was out as well and they never said anything??

All very good points. Thank folks. Since I boondock it more than anything I will just keep what I have. I have a few extra aqua taimers as well so I will be covered. Wife and I are heading out to the beautiful North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene river for a few weeks. Nice it's only 45 miles from the front door.

As noted, if you do that be sure to install a trap in the sink drain to prevent the black tank from venting up through the sink. Also be mindful of capacities and how you plan to use the trailer. If you are boondocking with no facilities and you fill the black tank up with gray water, that effectively takes the toilet out of commission. where you might get away with dribbling some gray water in the bushes, you won't want to be dumping a whole tank of black/gray when it fills up.

Not saying it's a bad idea, just a few considerations to think about. Depending on the underfloor space in the trailer, you may be able to add a gray tank and plumb the sink/shower into it. You would still want to trap those drains though and also vent the tank.

Idaho,

You may want to re-think the above solution.

By doing that, I think the black tank will "vent back" through your grey water plumbing. You may not like the results

Is there any space under the trailer that would allow for mounting a plastic type container, hanging it with plumbers tape & re-routing the gray water drains into it ?

Just a thought.

Man I have tried this site and that site and nothing seems to be working for uploading some pics. I will figure it out and thanks all for the advice. I will break in the portable holding tank over the next few weeks and see how that works out for me.

Joe, some one on this list has made a much easier way to upload photos-

No need to post them on another site first.
I would love to see your photos!

I had a popup that had a shower but no holding tank. Went to Wally World and bought two 7 gallon Aquatainers, hooked up a short garden hose to the outlet, put in a Y valve, and short hoses to the Aquatainers. I could take two showers before they both filled up. Also used one for the galley sink.

Joe welcome to the forum! Couple of issues at play here. Gray water in and of itself is not bad to drain out. If you are boondocking in the woods, I don't see a problem doing like you did with the gutter extension. Now if you are in a crowded campground and everybody is doing that, it's a mess.

In some places draining gray water is prohibited due to wildlife, plants, etc., so pay attention and don't drain it where you're not allowed.

Also gray water that drains upon use is usually not offensive. Gray water that sits in a holding tank for a couple days reeks almost worse than the black water. So draining gray water upon use is not the same as emptying a gray water tank in the woods.

Our first pop-up had no holding tanks. In campgrounds we used the bath houses and washed dishes with the tenters. At the beach we had to be self-contained so we used a cassette port-a-potti and I attached a hose to the sink that drained into a portable blue tote. If you use a basin in the sink for dishes, you can also dump that into the black tank thru the toilet.

There are a bunch of folks here on the forum that never went camping at all until they bought an RV and will try to convince you that gray water is toxic waste. It's not. Use your best judgement and be courteous to those around you and more importantly those who will come after you.

Man it appears the grey water is a touchy subject from reading other forums. First off let me explain that there was no food particles in the water. To be safe I even installed a screen over the drain pipe and then ran the flexible hose over that. Water was diverted down an embankment as well. Point was brought up in another forum about the new T.T.'s with outside showers. Whats the difference?? After further thinking I will more than likely just modify the pipe to drain into the black water tank somehow. Only bad think I really learned was to never leave your trash can uncovered. Darn skunk hit us up twice and knocked it over and made a mess. I wont throw can or glass into a fire pit.

Thanks for all the advice. It was not like I was dumping it right under the trailer. It was an 8 foot flexable hose that I hooked up to divert the water away. It was actually in a remote camp site and the water was being diverted down an embankment. I went our last night and bought one of those portable holding tanks to be safe and considerate. I did not think it was a big deal since I always see people throwing waste water on the ground from when they are tent camping. I will post pics tonight or tomorrow of the trailer.

The questions assume that you don't have a single black water tank that holds everything. If you have no tank, a portable tote container is the easiest solution.

Dumping waste water on Federal or State land is something to definitely avoid. There can be huge fines involved.
