2008 duramax and 2011 power stroke issues?

Hi all. Doing a little truck shopping today and I found a 2011 f250 xl 6.7 and a 2008 Chevy 2500 with the duramax. What are some issues that I should be checking for both trucks? I haven't driven either yet.... Maybe Tuesday but I'm just hoping for tips on questions to ask or verify what's been serviced.

All of the newer body trucks have the engines stuffed too far back under the dash to access much of anything on the engine from under the hood. They should start making them with engine hatch covers inside the cab, like vans, or just put the engine back where it belongs, under the hood instead of under the dash.

Turbo problems. (Lots of them)

More on the turbo problems

Valves falling off of their stems. (There is a TSB for this)

Glow plugs falling off into the cylinders blowing up the engine. (There is a TSB for this)

High pressure fuel pump failure (About 15 grand to fix.)

There are other problems with this engine, but the above are the big ones.

All that being said, Ford fixed a lot of stuff on this engine after 2014. They killed off the turbo problems cold with a single wheel turbo like everybody else runs. Bosch seems to have fixed the HPFP for the most part. The glow plug problems were only in the early 6.7's.

It's early but the 15 on up engines seem to be good engines and drive trains.

Yeah, I would like to know what those "lot of problems" are also. I have not heard about them. Need details please.

I should add to that we went with the ram when the 6.7 was in its first year. We didn't want to trust it. Ambulance manufacturers tell me the 6.7 has been good to the ambulance market. Ugh this is gonna drive me crazy lol.

I did look under the hood. Wow is it full! I've got to admit fords scare me a little as far as the motors. I mean I have a ford now with the v10 and no issues but the 6.0 and 6.4 really makes me wonder. I know it's been drummed on and on here on line but at work we put a ram chassis under an ambulance. We almost went with a Chevy van and it's the duramax but on a van it's overloaded as soon as you put two people in the front. I've heard great things about motor.

Didn't the 2011 Ford 6.7 have a plastic oil pan and turbo issues? I can't recall, but I thought it did and also had camshaft or crankshaft issues as well. Again not talking down this engine just recalling what I have heard. Also the Dmax has the Dpf so if it has over 100K it may need cleaned or replaced. The Dmax is a good engine though and I believe the newer Ford 6.7 2015 model is a good one as well. With that being said I'm sure others that have 2011-14 Fords have had good service and no issues so check the records on whatever your buying.

I have an 08 Duramax, see sig, and it has been flawless. Pop the hood on both truck and you will see the Duramax is not as complicated as the PS. I had a PS and it was nearly impossible to get your hand I. The engine to work on. My Duramax I can almost close the hood with me inside.

My truck just turned 130000 miles and has been in the shop once, to repair a leaky tranny cooler line. GM has a bulletin out on this issue so check the truck to see if it's been changed out. The leak is a the cooler in front t of the radiator. The OEM had plastic fittings and the new hoses use metal.

Love my Duramax just with the truck looked as good as the Ford.

From an engine standpoint only the Dmax is a far better choice.

The 2011-2014 had a lot of problems. Ford made a lot of changes on the 2015+ and that made a huge difference in reliability.

If you were talking about a 2015+ Ford my answer would be different.

I generally stay away from a first year of anything. Last year of a model or engine is much better than first.

2008 Duramax has the first gen DPF equipped exhaust.

2011 Powerstroke is the first year of the 6.7 and includes DEF equipped exhaust.

It really comes down to the history of the trucks. What kind of repairs were done, body repairs due to wrecks, physical condition, oil leaks, condition of front suspension ball joints. Obviously the '08 doesn't have any warranty left and the '11 may still have left this year pending mileage is less than 100k.

Good luck...
