2017 Super Duty is *****

Wow. Went to drive one yesterday and what a pickup it is. F350 ECSB 4x4 Diesel is what I drove. Tons and tons of power, good braking, amazing interior. Good ride, great capability for hauling and towing. ECSB is perfect size for inner city job sites.

Only three problems with the new truck:
1. Wish the 350 SRW came with an 11.5" rear end not 10.7" like Dodge and GM. I overload on our ranch on a weekly basis.
2. Like the new Duramax, the new engine is too quiet. I don't want a 6.0 clatter, but some noise is reassuring.
3. Too expensive. Holy **** these things cost an arm and a leg. Suppose that's 2017 class 3 truck buying for ya.

I really want my forever truck for my upcoming birthday present to myself. If I had the money I'd buy one of each as the Ford, the Dodge (I'm still calling it that, okay) and Chevy make tremendous 1-tons. If I were going dually the choice would be simple as the wide track front end on the F450 is tremendous, unique and a deal maker for me. But as my daily driver I want a SRW, especially with the F550 tatty but still mostly alive and kicking for the really big jobs.

I hope this post won't get bashed as a waste of time. I merely wanted to show that, unlike all too many here, I'm not a brand worshipping sheep. I've slammed Ford for their 6.0 and 6.4 engine disasters, and for running the same floppy frame for 25 years when the others changed theirs. But now, I think the Super Duty is top of the pile. Engine, frame, interior the whole kit and caboodle is top notch.

It's likely going to come down to what 1-ton SRW 4x4 diesel I can get the best deal on. I know whether it's the 2017 GM Duramx, Dodge Cummins or Ford PSD anyone who owns one is one lucky SOAB.

Never pulled the head on either. My current 2011 has 276k miles and not a rattle or squeak. I can change the Injectors on the side of the highway in under 3 hrs. In a Duramax or Ford it would take me literally 4-5 times as long. Same with water pump. Same with turbo. Mechanically both v8s are a flat out nightmare to work on. And the Ford 6.7 is the worst. And I would never, ever buy a Ford after how terrible Ford handled the 6.0.
I'm not arguing how each newer truck feels to drive. I've driven some really nice Ford's and Chevy's. If you aren't working on it, and don't mind more expensive repairs, then buy whatever you want.

Very well said. I was a die hard Ford guy for over 20 years until I had my 6.0L and got stung big time with extremely poor resale value. At the city I work at we had about 20 6.0L diesels and all had poor reliability and extremely expensive repairs at less than 60k miles on every one of them. Most of them are gone now; our fleet sent most of them to auction early to save their operating budget which was being depleted by the repairs to them. We have a couple of 6.4L trucks which have been much less than stellar as well and will be gone soon. These trucks have all been replaced by a combination of Ford 6.2L, V-10, and Ram/Cummins which have all been much better. We have a couple of Ford 6.7L trucks that were ordered by a fleet manager just before he retired last year and they are downright scary to look at under the hood of them. Time will tell as to their reliability. Our current fleet manager refuses to order any more Ford 6.7L trucks due to their complexity and potential future repair costs.

I am very happy with my choice to go to Ram/Cummins. I always felt that the Dodge truck was lacking compared to the Ford but that all changed with the 4th generation Rams.

My 05 6.0PSD sold with 170k miles and my current '12 6.7PSD has 114k miles with a combined 284k miles. Those combined miles I had my 6.0PSD in the shop twice (1 for a oil leak and 1 for a clogged EGR valve) which both repairs were covered under warranty. Neither of these trucks have cost me a dime in engine repairs for the combined 284k miles. Never replaced a single injector and never replaced a turbo.

Our 05 dodge cummins with 120k miles had all six injectors replaced, exhaust manifold, and a rear main seal.

You have been very fortunate. But when you have three Ford's with 900k miles, come back at tell me again how many egr coolers, ficms, injectors, you go through. If you had egr, followed by head gasket and injector problems on your Ford, you would have been out $6k plus.

Yes the 6.7PSD is assembled in Mexico along with US made parts (cummins98 one liner). Even your cummins block is casted in Mexico.

Having said that the ram is a foreign based company and Ford is a US based company.

Correction, Assembled in Mexico with mostly US Made components. Let's not forget your Michelin tires you like and Mexican Made engine.

If I were in the GASSER market a Ford would have a very good chance at being in my driveway.

Over a year a half later and 26K we are still high five'ing each other over our 2015 Laramie.

Chris

Three years with my Cummins, and after six recalls , I think things have smoothed out , hopefully. No high five'ing .

Wish you the best of luck... These type of problems can be frustrating.

Lot of ex Ford owners over on Cummins Forum as well...I be one.

Love Ford. Screw their diesel engine.

My sentiments exactly!

If I could put my Cummins in a new 17 SD I'd be ecstatic!

Obviously the OP doesn't care.

After driving a 6.7 Power Stroke for 5 years and 114k miles I wouldn't trade the 6.7PSD/drive train jewel for no other. It's been flawless.

I predicted after a Ram owner praised a Super Duty that the Ram Mafia would be out in full force. As usual I was correct. :B
