3" receiver on new 2017 SD = stinger is easy now?

Anybody tried it yet? I just found that my new truck has 3" receiver with 20k rating.
I think I can buy 3" tubing and make good stinger very cheap.

I install my chains in such a way the serve as side chains and safety chains.

CURT is very respectful manufacturer and if they design extension without the chains, I assume it is well tested.
All those receivers are always coming with play and I am pretty skeptic about those gizmos with 2 small bolts holding 8000 lb receiver.
Still there is no such thing as too much protection and I have seen lot of older receivers where the holes become oval from the small play wearing out over the years.
I am thinking about adding cables, what will save chain weight and avoid shocks on turns.

No I haven't. The thought never crossed my mind but thank you.

I haven't even used it yet and wont for a few more weeks.

My trailer loaded will only weigh about 1500 lbs.
My extension is about 40 inches long. I have experimented with and without side chains while flat towing my Samurai. I setup a camera so I could see the hitch/extension movement. There is an exceptional amount of side pressure during turns. I am convienced that as strong as the tubing is, if the trailer or Towed whipped side to side there could be a major problem. Personally, I will not use my extension without the side chains.

Did you add side chains to stabilize any lateral movement? I'm needing this extension to attach a car dolly to pull my mini behind my truck..

Thanks!

With the 3" Super Duty hitch, if you are using a TC that has an overhang that requires a 36" or 48" extension to tow a boat with 500# tongue weight, can this now be done without a Torklift super truss extension? This would be great not having to swap out the factory receiver and install the TL receiver and extension.

That would be a plus. I think some of the TL stuff is, frankly, overpriced.

I just order front camper ties from TL.
$320 for about 40 lb of steel that did not fit too well.......
TL receiver and stinger runs close to 4-digits price tag.
I am happy I can DIY for $30 with the same if not better results.
It is nice to have options.

Maybe a little over the top in spite of your thought. In any case, TorkLift is a great company with a long track record. 3 inch hitches ... not so much!

Again, the load bearing capacity comes with square of height.
So in sample of headers 2 pcs of 6" will have 36+36= 72 strength number.
Single piece of 12" will have 144. That is twice as much.
That is why single 3" tubing is having close capacity to TL Supertruss.

Well I don't see how that's the same at all as the pieces aren't connected. I have a super truss extension and believe it to be a truss

Why don't you consider it a truss? It would seem to me that after it's bolted together it is exactly that... but I'm not an engineer.

Unfortunately it is not. In my remodeling carrier I have seen it lot of times, when home-builders tough that 2 pcs of 6" tall headers will make the same what 12" header for garage door.
A year later 1 FOOT sag proved them wrong.

A hollow ball mount - not something it's want when towing heavy.

I don't think the stinger is the only factor. If it is going to be short like mine, I don't think it matters. I think you have to consider the total system which includes the truss and also the hitch.
