Any 13' Ram DEF MPG yet?

Vanished

Just stopped by dealer and checked out a new'13 Ram 2500 4x4 Laramie Diesel and was wondering if anyone got theirs yet? How are the MPG's compared to the last few years? Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

PS - Yes I still want a 5th wheel, No I still can't pull one with my Power Wagon and recent circumstances are going to most likely require me to buy a new camper this week... So decisions, decisions... TT or 5th wheel, but the 5th will require a truck to go with it! ๐Ÿ™‚

Jim can you smell the DEF when filling and if so what does it smell like?
chevman

Smells like amonia... You can't smell it unless you put your nose right at the container lid. :E

so maybe smells like the old "hamper" one would put "soiled" diapers in back 35-40 years ago and longer, when you still used cloth diapers and washed them to use again and again and again? AHHHH, those were the day's......yeah, right....................:E

Now I know the smell. I am old.

NC you are averaging almost 19 MPG? (1114 miles with 60 gal of fuel used)

Much better than me. I am averaging about 14.0 since I bought it.

Hey Jim, I had to have messed up somewhere...evidently, I don't know what I'm doing (:S).

I had looked at the fuel filter life information screen and saw that I had 1134 miles or whatever it was then, and over to the right it stated 60 gallons had been used.....so something is wrong with that number, or I don't know what to look at...Haven't really kept up with how much fuel I've put in the truck, and when I saw that on that one information screen, guess I "assumed" that is how many gallons I had used...never thought about doing the division....

SOOOOO, sorry about the misinformation...wasn't trying to say something that isn't true, just copied the miles on the odometer and it stated 60 gallons of fuel used...Maybe it's something that can be re-set and I've done it and not been aware of doing it???

Believe I've averaged around 15.5 mpg overall since I've owned the truck

Again, sorry about that...when it came to the number of gallons, I copied it from the screen not really thinking about mpg...

Maybe I ought to read the information about the information on the dash:B

Nope, didn't smell it...stuck the nozzle into the DEF tank and pumped and to be truthful, didn't smell anything.....

Topped off the DEF today..I have a filling station about 8 miles down the road where I can pump it @ $2.89 a gallon. I purchased a 2.5 gallon jug of Blu Def for 11.47 @ Walmart a few weeks ago to have, "just in case"....BUT...it's MUCH cheaper to pump it at a station.

I was curious to see what the experience would be like and how much it would take. When I took possession of the truck, gage showed full, though I have no clue how "full" it was.

Anyway, I have 1114 miles on the tank...EVIC shows I've used 60 gallons of fuel...no towing, and more city driving than I care to drive in this truck, one trip to and from WV, mostly interstate and the rest driving to and from work.

I pumped in $7 of the DEF @ 2.89 per gallon for a fill of 2.422 gal....SOOOOO, you figure I've used 60 gallons of fuel (That's what the EVIC showed) and in the same time may have used 2.42 gallons of DEF that is about 25:1 as opposed to the claim of Chrysler possibly being 50:1.. or simply put, 50 gal. of DEF for 1 gallon of DEF......

Again, don't know how "full" DEF tank was, but I know how much I put in it and when pumped "clicked off", I stopped....so now I know..

Just for something to compare to. My 11 HO with 7,423 miles on AMZ/OIL 15-40 100% Synthetic the TBN was 4.7 and had plenty of life for a longer drain interval. The fuel % was less than 0.5 and anything less than 2.0 is acceptable. They said to change oil at 7,500 until the metals numbers improve because of the newer engine.

Why would the oil be black, the 2013 3500 is using DEF no more reason to have the third injection event to reduce nasty tailpipe emissions. This is what made the oil black in pre DEF Cummins powered Rams, that fuel wasting third event.

The '13 still have to regen to burn the soot collected in the DPF. The use of DEF eliminates NOX in the exhaust which also helps reduce soot production by allowing less EGR volume but does not eliminate soot produced by the combustion process.

From the 2010 and 2012 models, once you had an oil change, in just a couple hundred miles or so, the oil looked "dirty/black". I had almost 1,000 miles on my truck when I checked yesterday and the oil is not dirty looking it still looks very clean. There is a difference in how much cleaner the oil now looks in the 13 compared to my 10 and 12 after the above stated mileage.

NC,
Do you plan on following the OLM to determine when to change the oil?

NOPE!! I get 3 years of free oil changes...it would be RARE for me to put 15,000 miles on my truck in 1 year...SOOOOOO, I'll probably take advantage of the free oil changes and get one every 6 months,ie (work it to where it's 2 a year). "IF" I were going by the OLM, then when it stated, "oil change due", then I would change the oil...I beleive 15,000 miles is a "best case" driving/towing scenario and the OLM actually allows you to drive 15,000 miles before you get the message to change the oil.

That's probably a wise choice... I would monitor other's UOA to see if these engines improved on oil dilution via regens.

On our 05 chev the dash showed the correct fuel mileage. Math was the same result. Then in 09 on the trip to Wisconsin the speedometer stopped working as did most 05 chevs. After it was fixed back home the mileage and fuel used were way off. I had a reflash done last summer and both are good enough but not perfect as once. So I feel other brands can do the correct fuel mileage as ours did but the math will be the deciding factor. After talking to many diesel guys pulling the same weight as we do or close to it we all get about the same mileage. As we know the roads and winds make up what we get.

Well I can't obviously speek for the 13 owners but checking my 4x4 12 dually with 4.10s yesterday driving 61 with cruise it was logging 18.3 mpg. Only have around 10K miles on it but it keeps making small improvements as I get more miles on it. Not super but I'm good with that.

WOW...hold on to that bad boy...I had a 2010 dodge 3500HD CC/LB/Cummins/Auto/ 4X4 with 4:10 then the 2012, same configuration cept the 10 was a Laramie and the 12 was a Longhorn and running both on the same trip of 260 miles one way, running at speeds of 45 to 70 mph, I NEVER got that with either..Course I didn't run the entire trip @ 61 mph, so that might possibly make some difference...Had around 38,000 on the 10, only had about 4,000 on the 12'

I get 18.3 mpg on a trip and I'm going to throw a party....I have a little over a 1,000 miles on this one and have gotten over 16.5 mpg on the same trip at the same speeds, empty. Have not towed yet.....What is your city driving like? Driving around town I'm getting 15.5 or so and never saw that with city driving on the 10 or the 12....

I have a '12 with 4:10's a the best I see is 14-15 highway. Throw in a regen and it's more like 10-12.

Hand calc the 18.3 and he will be around 16 at the best.
