Arctic fox truck camper 990 or 992?

We are considering buying a 2016 992 vs a 2017 990 TC. I have been over the floor plans, weight and other specs. Still indecisive. it is for true 4 season camping in Yukon and Alaska with 2 adults and 2 kids. Planning to have it for 10 years. Anyone have experience with either of these TCs they would like to share?

Also considering a 2015 Ram 3500 Laramie dually. Overall its a big rig for us, but I think it will take us places that we want to go 🙂

Are you looking at a gas or diesel? Gas I would go with 4.10's, diesel 3.73's.

I run 410's in my 2015 Diesel with the Aisin trans. I could run lower, but that is what it came with. But when that light turns green, if I want I can "run with traffic" :).

This thread is about AF 990s and 992s! You had an 1140! When are you going to quit whining about your so called bad experience? I guess some guys just like to complain about everything.......
Why can't you stay on subject?

X2. If someone has a question about a Lance, then participate. You probably wouldn't be happy with a newer Lance either.

My slightly smaller AF811 was reliable and handled temperatures from the single to triple digits. Having a curb side slide is more convenient than street side. If you are trying to stay thin, you can open the slide just a touch if you need access to something - There is no reason you have to fully open the slide if you do not need to.

With the number of people in your family you may want a larger camper for some elbow room.

we first had a wolf creek 840 which has the restricted entrance into the bunk area. on some real hot nights (even with AC on) we found we needed a small fan to circulate air or it got hot in the bunk area.

we we went with the 990 which is wide open between bunk and cabin area for air flow. seems to have solved the problem.

in the winter I camp where we have a electrical connection or I run generator with extened run fuel tank as we are gone all day snowmobiling. I then plug in electric heater to keep camper warm. I have storm windows but if I did it again I would get thermo pane windows. I put reflex on some windows and under the bed put switch on fan that blows warm air to tanks been out in -30 degree weather

Thank you all this is super helpful!!! We are currently looking at a couple of Dodge Ram trucks 3500 dually with or without air ride aka air stabilization system. Anyone have experience w air ride versus after market air bags re: stability, diving performance and maintenance, particularly in northern climates and also towing?

Also, all those who responded have 99s, any 992s out here????

So great to hear about winter performance. This would be so awesome as we live near some gorgeous mountain passes!!!!

Thanks again!

Temps... in a 990

Well, my personal best, heheh, is 14F and no problems.
but that's probably like Summer to you all up there so can't say "How Low, shall we Go..." Hit 16f a few weeks/month ago, no big deal but as noted, blowing through Propane. I have the 2 7-gal bottles and a back up 7-gal used for BBQ and a backup in worst case scenarios, I turn on the water heater to keep that warm and I've heard of opening all the cupboards to allow heat in, but haven't gotten that far yet...
So far, no big deal with Truck or Camper.. sigh, that I KNOW of at least... I also have Solar, which doesn't help if covered in snow, so carry a Honda and have the OEM Onan propane as a backup to the backup.. heheh,
Like the old saying " One is None, Two is One"...

Hope that helps...

My preference is for the slide to open toward the Curb. (The 990)
I prefer that for side-of-road stops or stream side stops for the view.
The down side is that the road crown slopes in the same direction which makes longer term parking not so good with the slide open.
The 992 slide opening is over the elect/water/sewer hookups in parks. That leaves room for camp chairs etc on the passenger side - so that's a plus for the 992.

No comment on 990 vs 992. That's just personal preference imo.
You ar picking a very capable sweet combination though!
Regarding 4 season camping, there's a difference between "normal" winter and the northern reaches of the continent. Just because Arctic is in the name does not mean it's Arctic rated! I'd expect to do some mods/ better insulating/and prep for "true" 4 season up north. They are more of a 2.8 season camper up there without some help. Been As cold as low teens/single digit nights and above freezing and sunny during the day and a AF 860 with no additional help/insulation peeled through over a 30lb bottle of propane and would run the batteries dead on the furnace fan before you were ready to get up in the morning.
Any colder or more use at those temps would have warranted shoring up some things on the camper.

On the truck, again talking out my _____but I would prefer simplicity in extreme low temps. At 30-50 below lots of things break that shouldn't.
