attaching rack equip to my roof

Looking for info or experiece in regards to attaching rack equipment on the roof of my 02 1010 lance. its the metal roof with some type of cover on it. From the factory it has adjustable slide type bike racks that looked like they were just screwed in and caulked/sealed. From researching projects it appears that the roof has a frame, then a plywood layer and then the metal layer. Any advice other than dont put anything up there would be appreciated. I am makeing a rack that will fit two kayaks over all my A/C and stuff. thanks, JR

I used to have an eide boat loader on my old truck! Yes i like mounted to roof in prime locations. I am going to weld a cross bar from the side bars in the back, with two t's sticking towards the rear that over hang the rear of the camper a bit. long rollar, like the kind on front of boat trailer will bolt between the t's to rest kayak on to lift/pull up. I have a used roller from a boat trailer and also one from an old push mower. Could go crazy with some type of pulley system, but im not that decrepid i cant lift a kayak up onto my roof:)

I was thinking and remembered Eide boat loaders made in Oregon . I`v had some of there other products and they make good stuff . Looks like they make a canoe loader for a truck camper on their web site that pulls it up on top . Maybe you can at least get some ideas by looking . boatloader.com

I think it would be a great idea to raise the rack and have it only touch and be screwed to the roof in prime locations. You would`nt create ponds on your roof
Also ,Lance builds up the aluminum roof at the AC , vents ... by striping around those areas with 1/4" material so the water runs away , thats why the alum roof seems loose or mushy around those areas

alright, thanks! You think it would be safe to say that the original tracks are screwed into studs? I think its welding time. Weld up an aluminum rack all the way across side to side front and back and make it higher than my ac. Or make front to back rails on the outside lip and mount yakima tracks on that, like they do on the new ones, to gain needed height. Utilize tie down brackets also, front and back.

A 1010 may be diffrent than my 500 , but I dont think the roof construction is . When I cut a sky light into my bathrm what I saw was framing side wall to side wall at interior ceiling panel joints , easy to find. Trim on ceiling, and intermediate side to side framing at vent sides AC sides , With luon panel on inside ceiling and on roof , bonded with spray type expand foam . Vapor barrier over that then the alum roof
I would only attach anything to the framing . When you think you know where it is on the roof , use a real small drill bit to make sure you hit framing before you screw into it, use butel tape and dicor to seal it
You may be able to find all the framing using a stud finder from the inside
Or maybe Lance can provide a framing diagram, Northstar provided me a diagram for a camper once

flip, if you buy the Yakima tracks, they should come with stainless steel screws for mounting. (just make sure they're not too long )As far as I know,there is a thin sheet of plywood or fiberboard under your aluminum skin which you should be able to mount to but I would get that confirmed by Lance before you start drilling. Use stainless screws and Dicor "self leveling" sealant to seat and seal the tracks. The basket is strong but I think you will still need a forward tie-down/mounting point to attach to. I mounted a stainless tie-down on the roof as far forward as I could. This is where your strength will come from. Even with the basket, I don't think you'll get the boats above the AC though. You might have to load one on each side of the AC unless your kayaks are stackable. Good luck, Brad

jacinto, im looking at mounting two kayaks, 12-14 feet in length and need them to be above my AC and other vents. Are the baskets strong enough for that if you attach on top of them?

thanks for the replies so far. I have contacted lance and asked how they attach the yakima racks and if it matters where i start putting in screws. So what im really trying to find out is

1) What type of hardware needs to be used
2) Can the hardware be used anywhere on the roof
3) what type of sealing process do i need to use

Those should be Yakima tracks. You can add more tracks if necessary. You will need the Yakima control towers that mount into the tracks and the crossbars which come in varying lengths. Should run around $200 for the setup. I raised the height and added storage on mine by mounting a Yakima cargo basket to the bars. All the different attachments will mount to the cargo basket as well.

not really but thanks. I found those also. Nothing in there about mounting the racks to the roof and what to use. I already have the stock rack on there, i need more of the tracks or just to put a bigger rack on.
