Here is one for the weight police! I was going through some of my old photos the other day and found this. Taken in the early 80s it shows my rig....a F250 + 11 1/2 foot camper + 3500 lb boat on a 48" extension.

I knew nothing about GVWR or axle weights or tire loading. Cannot believe I did that! Took my family several times across the Rockies from Alberta to BC. Mind you, I was not the only one doing this sort of thing in those days.

One time my father-in-law borrowed the camper and loaded it on his 1/2 ton dodge and drove out to Vancouver for the worlds fair in 1986. It must have been a little hard to handle!!!

At least it was 2WD so you didn't have far to go to ground if you had a flat.

When I got my first truck camper (1975, there were a lot of overloaded trucks with some pretty big campers on them. The one that I always remembered the most was a 11 foot Vacationeer Self Contained camper sitting a raised, 1/2 ton shortbed stepside 4 wheel drive pickup. I asked the owner how was his truck able to do that, and he replied because of the spring job he had done. To me, it looked like it could tip over very easily.

This was my "What was I thinkin!" rig.

An '82 F250 6.9L Diesel, 4 speed manual tranny. That's my first TC it's hauling, a 10ft Jayco............

And I was towing a 16ft flatbed trailer off a 36" hitch extension with (what else?) another T-bird on it. Number four if I'm not mistaken.

I had two flats on the trailer on that trip (I'm changing one of them in these pic's) and one on the truck. I think it was this trip that it finally dawned on me that the chrome spoke wheels the previous owner had put on the truck weren't rated high enough for what I was doing. The flat on the truck was caused by a cracked wheel.

That's my son standing next to the truck with the dog.

As Homer Simpson would sing:

"I am so smart!"

"S-M-R-T!"

In my first camper; also on a 70s ford (1974 F350 supercab) I thought it would be GREAT to have a full bar, so I (we) could have anything we wanted without worrying about finding a store in the "wilds" where we camped for supplies. Friends kids and sometimes my cat often rode in the cabover on the bed. They LOVED it! That said, I probably had dozens of heavy, GLASS filled booze bottles, mixers, etc. in the OVERhead cabinet above the dinette. Never had a problem in the 2 years I used the truck/camper.... Well, until the front jack tore away from the frame and my old Lance camper, along with all the booze in it literally rolled down an embankment where I had it sitting... What alcohol abuse THAT was! 😉 Lower center of gravity?! What was that? Too much weight in the cabinet or the camper?!? Wadayamean? It's a truck! It's made for that!

Boat's probably hitched to the bumper, too...

Tires may not be squishing, but the rear springs sure are!!!

Putting 10-ply tires on half ton trucks since aught-four.

We didn't know any better in those days. My dad had a 65 GMC 920, it was called a 3/4 ton but actually a heavy half, with a 283 (only V-8 available)three in the tree and no power anything. The dealer talked him out of the options, said no one would want them come trade in time. He drove that thing with an 8ft overhead camper for five years. It was a real handful in a prairie cross wind. :R
