Bad smells under the kitchen sink

I figure this has been covered , and have read the last post blaming the fans. I looked under my kitchen sink and the vent pointing up it seems to me is always open. It is just a rubber flap in a plastic tube.

CHUCKSTER can you say something here? Should it be down or up... No not the roll of paper:)

Thanks all, and Merry Christmas.

Cheap ones use a flapper held on via a 'tang'
Over time the 'tang' stretches and flapper is not pulled UP tight closing off openings to atmosphere

When draining your waste tank a negative pressure (vacuum) can be pulled on sink drain line. This could suck 'P' traps dry....the 'Air Admittance Valve' allows air to be drawn into drain line after the 'P' trap.
Then they close when dumping of waste tank is completely.

If they don't fully close.......grey tank STINK comes back inside RV
And Grey can STINK worst then Black

Replace with a better AAVs like the Oatley
Is it time for your medication or mine?

Notice the one he linked to is an Oatey brand - it has a narrow top. A lot of household ones have a larger diameter top. When we changed all three of ours, the larger ones fit on two vents, but not on the third because the vent pipe was too close to the sink bowl. Had to do a bit of driving to find a the narrower style to fit the third tank.

Also, a year after changing ours, we again had a stink at the kitchen sink that we couldn't figure out. In the end, one of the burners on the propane stove, next to the sink, had been turned on just enough so we were smelling the stink of the propane. Check that.

commonly called a cheater vent used in homes and rvs instead of running a pipe through the roof to vent. that valve sounds like it is stuck open and needs replacing. cheap fix.
