can the city water run into the trailer at all times?

I am about to move into an aljo trailer. the other day we thought we would hook it up to the city water. it was on all night. i now have learned i need a psi of 40 and also a white hose. any way the next day the carpet in the middle of my trailer was soaked. i vacuumed it up and the next day (shut off city water) it was soaked again. some how the grey tank was over filling. i barely used any water. it is supose to come out through the shower or sink but last owner had plugs in them so for some reason have no idea how it went upwards through the floor. pls help me understand how this happened. and yes i have read my manual. More info when we thought we overfilled the fresh water tank I ran water to release pressure for like 2 minutes then from under the trailer where the grey tank is located started spilling on the ground. the manual said if u r not level which we were not the drainage won't drain right and could back up. usualy the over flow would release back into the shower but it had a cap in it also the sink so no water could b released back into it. the next lowest point is the middle of the floor. been reading about some kind of roof vent to release the over flow don't know anything about that but it obviously didn't release there. hope this explains a little better. thankyou

Karen, the kind of problems you're having with the plumbing in your trailer are going to be extremely difficult for anyone on a forum to help you fix. There are just too many things that can go wrong, and from the sound of it your trailer has many issues that need to be resolved.

I would recommend that you get someone local who can put their hands and eyes on things to help you get your problems under control. If you're living in the trailer full-time you need to do this quickly, because unfixed water leaks are the death of RV's. The materials used to build them don't hold up to being soaked with water for long. You could very easily end up living in a trailer that is literally rotting away around you, technically uninhabitable, too expensive to fix, and of no value for sale or trade.

I wish you the best of luck.

i am wondering if maybe the previous owner had a gray tank flush installed and tapped into the city water line and either the check valve or a on/off valve is not holding and leaking by

Karen,

I read this post for the first time today and noticed that you have not responded. I hope you found your fix and would be interested to know how it worked out.

When you hook up to city water it has nothing to do with your gray tank. They are completely separate systems. It sounds like to me that you have a leak in your fresh water system somewhere. If water is leaking out from under the trailer "by" the gray tank, it most likely is a sign of a leak above the gray tank. If not properly winterized in the fall pipes can and do break and that is what you are probably faced with.

One way to tell has already been proposed. Fill the FW tank, disconnect the city water and turn on the pump inside the trailer. If anything is leaking you will find out quickly.

Let us know how this works out.

With some county/city water districts running 80-100 and even 150 lb of pressure anyone not using a water pressure regulator (I prefer brass) on the supply faucet is tempting a flooded trailer.

I've seen and I'm sure others have also, a RV trailer sitting in the campground/rv park with water running/dripping from underneath with a flooded campsite or the outside hose squirting water everywhere. Usually these folks weren't at home so we turn the water off for them. We also notice a pressure regulator wasn't used in some cases.

Agree, make a trip for a good regulator. At times water pressure in CGs will change and this way, you're covered. Also the pressure test.

Re the current mess you're dealing with....agree that is sounds like you've got a leak somewhere in a line or your grey tank is full. Generally, when the grey tank is truly full, the water will overflow into the shower. When that gets full, it's over the top. I'm not understanding the "plugs"....are these just the standard "stoppers" that come with all the sinks and showers/tubs or something that was added? Purpose??

If you're not being extremely miserly with your water, you can fill a grey tank before you realize it. The downside of leaving it open is that you could get odors from the sewer system itself. Closing it will stop that but you'll have to be vigilant about making sure to dump the grey daily. Don't trust the sensors for the tanks....they're nearly always completely wrong. Our brand new TT showed a full black tank before we ever used it. Likely a sliver of some building material on the sensor. It's remedied itself, but we never trust it. You'll learn with time what your usage is and when to dump.
