Chrysler Town and Country Towing

I have a 2014 Chrysler Town and Country van. I am interested in any information from anyone towing anything besides a pop up. I've read a lot of negative information on towing a standard trailer, not so much for the weight limit but because of the height of a standard trailer. The V6 engine paired with the 6 speed transmission, seems to have more than adequate power. If there is anyone out there that is towing anything other than a pop up, with this combination I would love to hear from you on your success or not so successful. Thanks!

We have a 2011 T&C, 3.6 Pentastar, 6 speed transmission. It does put the power to the pavement efficiently, or it feels that way. It doesn't strike me as much of a tow vehicle. We have a Suburban for towing. I think you would be better off getting a used vehicle capable of towing, 1/2 ton, V8 or ecoboost V6, etc..

True, but it can be done. Not cheaply though.

I did call Can-Am and had a lengthy discussion with one of their towing specialists. They even sent me pics of their Minivan like mine they use to pick up and deliver trailers. Specifically how to reinforce the hitch. I still have the pic but Photobucket locked down my account.

I agree with a lot of what Can Am says and some of their philosophies I adopted. Iโ€™m telling ya, that pup towed behind my van like it was on rails. Maybe the looseness in the van is due to just age. There are a lot of interior panels on a Minivan. Especially with roof air and overhead consoles.

Here is an interesting article from Hitch Hints about an accident Can-Am had with a Chrysler 300 towing a 30 ft Airstream. They broadsided a car that pulled out in front of them.

Hitch Hints- article on page 6

Itโ€™s a good read, by itโ€™s a big pdf so give it a little time if on Cellular.

Ah, yes, Can Am. Where even a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic will leave their facility with a 26,000 lb. trailer tow rating, and they will look at you with a straight face and tell you that it is 100% safe.

Gee. Youโ€™d have been sitting at home fifty years ago while the rest of us hitched up and left. Unibody cars were preferred.

If you or these others understood how WD works, it might make it easier to understand what we ALL did to pull travel trailers once the Reese Dual Cam was introduced.

What Andy does is to have refined the method. Better tools for figuring out which vehicles are better suited than others.

Let us know when SAE and Airstream call on you for expertise.

I doubt any of you has used a properly set up car/trailer rig.

The OP is well-advised to ask at Can Am

Having towed a small travel trailer with a mini-van I am informed. I've towed two different trailers with vehicles very close to limits so I am VERY informed. More important I have experience. Yes, both rigs were setup perfectly safe. Both were able to tow the trailers in question.

One big concern I have with CanAm is liability. Canada is not nearly as litigious of a society as the US. In the US should you get into an injury or death related accident while towing and the opposing attorney find out you were towing over weight, you will have civil liabilities that may devastate you financially. Will CanAm assume liability for the recommendations they make? Likely not.

I will say this, there is a night and day difference between towing with marginal cushion and towing with an appropriately sized vehicle with margin in the specs. Having experience I think if the OP follows through he will be buying a new truck or SUV in 12-18 months.

You have to watch out for hitch weight, because that will top out at your rated limit (350 lbs or so?) before you hit your towing limit. That said, you could tow a Scamp, 16' Casita (not the 17, too tongue-heavy), Li'l Snoozy (factory direct from SC, and I know of a FL owner who has a used one for sale), Parkliner, or similar trailer. The rounded, narrower and lower profile of these molded-fiberglass bodies will tow fine behind your minivan and the hitch weights tend to be in the 250-300 lb range when ready for camping. Another possible lightweight (and affordable!) TT is the Eureka, built in TN; it is low and narrow but it will have somewhat more wind resistance because it's boxy.

Any TT you buy, look at both the dry weight and the dry hitch weight and figure you'll have to add the weight of a battery, full LP tank(s), options, gear, and probably some water (8.3 lbs per gallon adds up fast!).

I put 140,000 towing miles on a 2008 Toyota Highlander with pretty much the same engine output as yours. Mostly I towed a 6x12 cargo trailer or Lil Hauley (empty Snoozy body) cargo for work; in summers I had a 17' Burro followed by a KZ Escape E14RB. The molded Burro put much less stress on the HL and gave me almost 3 mpg extra than the blocky KZ. However, I had 5000/500 tow rating, so I could handle the 370-390 lbs I was carrying on the hitch from the KZ.

Unfortunately, that is not feasible. My son, who just graduated college, is looking for a job as a major corporation CEO. That is not feasible either.
