Clean Diesel trucks for TC ... maybe not!

Not sure how, but I found this article in my news feed. The net is that although DPFs lower the emissions when the engine is running in a non-regen case, the diesels exceed limits as soon as the engines go in regen mode.

I think this means we’ve added a power robbing emissions system and don’t even get the benefit of cleaner air. Go figure.

The story is about diesels in Europe, but I think the principle applies to truck diesels here, too.

All those things can be monitor by ScanGauge and even $5 plug with Torque will monitor those less REGEN status.
The only advantage of Edge is forcing regeneration.. if it works on my Powerstroke.

It's far more than a "scanner"

It has a lot of options for additional info.

In my Silverado I can monitor:
EGT
Turbo Boost
ECT
Trans Temp
Battery VOltage
Regen Status
IAT
Current gear that the trans is in
Speed
Engine RPM
...and a plethora of other things.

They also are lousy with answering the questions. "call us" is not really what I consider good answer.

How do you know when regeneration is pending?
My Powerstroke has no driving symptoms, when ScanGauge engineers are still working on making a gauge that would work.
The only times I can catch regeneration is seeing soot level dropping at high rate and when I zero my cluster gauge, the usual 12 mpg drops to 8 mpg.

If you are looking for a monitor that will show amount of soot, and regen status as well as can start a regen manually the edge insight works on my 2019 chevy. Call edge products they will know if it will work on a ford. The nice thing is if my soot level is getting high and I know I will not be making any long drives I can force a regen
and get it done so it isn't trying to regen when I am stop and go driving around town. It even tracks miles since last regen and automatically resets. Mine goes between 450 and 500 miles between regens. My truck has a higher idle when in regen, about 300 rpm.

I have no exact knowledge of the frequency of regeneration but my truck seems to go many hundreds of miles before a regen which only lasts 10 minutes or so. I actually think I go thousands of miles before a regen unless I am doing lots of driving in slow traffic or idling for long periods of time.

Lots of people with no experience fear new diesels. After having had older and current there is nothing to be afraid of. Yes, there were some bad results in the transition years, not today.

And power robbing? I think not. More power and better economy than ever before.

1 they are talking about 2 cars that never made it to America and probably never will
2 that applies to new Euro 6d-temp limits, who will never made it to America neither
3. my Ford diesel when driven with camper seem to do self-regeneration when under constant load. I scan soot level constantly and it never exceeds 40%
Diesel in Sprinter does regeneration every 900 miles, in sedan every 600 miles.
You worry too much
Modern diesels driven in Los Angeles smog exhaust cleaner air than they inhale.
