Towed a U-Haul 5x8 cargo trailer loaded full of furniture this weekend. Trip was about 3.5 hrs one way (~230 miles or so). Speed limit was 110 Km/h, or about 70 mph. I obeyed the limit. Weather was just below freezing. Wind was up pretty good, side wind both ways.



Trip there pulling the U-Haul trailer, 12 mpg (20L/100 Km).

Trip home without the U-Haul trailer, 17 mpg (16L/100 Km).

Not really impressed. This is for the truck in my sig pic, and it has about 150,000 miles on it (242,000 Km).

*Maximum recommended speed is 55 MPH

I get about 10 pulling the Jayco Hybrid. It is a 2010, and as such, it's a full 8' wide vs the newer 7 and 7.5' wide models.

I live in south central BC, if I keep the speed around 95-100 KMH my 05 ctd will go to Vancouver and back comfortably on one tank of fuel. 110+ I have to top up about 125 km from home.

This is the first opportunity I've had for an empty hwy run with this truck. So no baseline to go off of. I just thought it would do better empty. The truck is well taken care of, it was divided highway all the way, used cruise the whole way, set at the legal limit of 110 Km/h. No hard acceleration, and it's between Manitoba and Saskatchewan so barely any hills. Tires are properly inflated.

Keep in mind that people have been arrested for impeding traffic flow for not going enough over the speed limit in this country. Also, it is widely preached that speed variation is at least as much of a danger as absolute speed. Can you imagine the howls of protest if everyone that rented a U-Haul followed the speed limit that was posted on the trailer? I have seen quite a few that only have a 45 speed limit by U-Haul. Personally, I think that those should be banned from public roads.

I am not a speed demon but I do believe that there are good reasons for everyone to drive about the same speed.

12 mpg towing and 17 empty.... You got 42% better fuel economy non towing vs towing.

20 L/100 km vs 16 L/100 km...
So you used 20% less fuel non towing vs towing.

Something doesn't add up??????

MPG sounds about what I would have expected. You would probably be similar to most any other gas tow vehicle.

And ignore those admonishing you for driving 70 MPH. Some people always need to find something to complain about.

I wonder if they use different tires and axles that reduce he speed? No they donโ€™t!

As was said that is a lawyer recommendation meant for people that donโ€™t tow anything.

Even though itโ€™s lighter itโ€™s still going to get bad mileage due to the height of the trailer. Even towing my snowmobile trailer with my V-10 3 place 2k lbs. it gets 2 mpg better than when I tow my TT. And with our 13 Explorer I got 12. Yes it was -5 when I was towing but it makes a difference.

I think they are on the auxiliary speed police force. :S

BTW, I think the mileage is right on and acceptable.

You failed to read the instructions.

Slow down when towing

AVOID CRASHES by slowing down. Reduce your speed from what you would normally drive without a trailer under similar road conditions. The maximum recommended speed is 55 mph when towing a U-Haul trailer. Do not exceed any posted speed limit.

If you tow one of those around here at 55 mph you will get run over. Before you get to the interstate. I often wonder if they were all produced during the fuel shortages and hence the fender signs.
