Electrical question

I am looking at buying a 100% electric 26 foot camper. It has 50 amp power but most of the campgrounds I go to only offer 30amp. I know I can buy a adaptor to plug in to 30 amp but will I be limited on what I can run. Any help here will be great.

Hi,

I run my class C on all electric as often as I can. I have a modest solar system, a medium size battery bank, and a good hybrid inverter. I last purchased propane in September 2014.
Regards, Don
My ride is a 28 foot Class C, 256 watts solar, 556 amp-hours of Telcom jars, 3000 watt Magnum hybrid inverter, Sola Basic Autoformer, Microair Easy Start.

'edison' serch comes up with Grey Wolf but I do not see the Edison option listed.
Is this the right one?

Yes you will be limited on what you can run. One or two high power items only.

High power items:

Air conditioner
Electric water heat
Microwave
Electric cook top
Electric oven
Hair blow dryer
Electric space heater
Electric coffee
Toaster
etc

I suppose if you were going to park it long term at site with 50A available it might make sense. You wouldn't have to keep filling propane tanks. However, if you're going to go from here to there and then somewhere else it could be an issue. When we full timed in the motorhome we were able to get 50A service maybe 75% of the time. It usually came with an increased nightly cost. Of course, we had all the usual propane appliances in addition to the 50A service so even with only 30A service we were still able to use the stove, water heater and refer on gas and just switched them to electric when available.

Wouldn't the limiting factor be only 1 leg of 30A? Or do the adapters split the 30A for both legs?

If it is ever towed for use a 100% electric isn't a good idea.
Both 50A hots are connected to the 30A hot so 120V everywhere with a 30A total limit.

Towing is dependent upon batteries with inverter, length of time, temperature, plus solar, TV charging capability and gen running.

Thank you

Yes it can be done with a decent battery bank and inverter setup, but why sink a bunch of money into a trailer that is designed for 100% electrical.

I personally have never seen one, so does it still have 12V or is it all 120V?

You will be limited to a total draw of 3600 watts (120V x 30A) vs the 12,000 watts (2 x 120V x 50A) you can draw from a true 50A service.
You will MAYBE be able to run the water heater and A/C but don't try the microwave or any other high draw appliance (coffee pot, toaster, hair dryer) at the same time.
I would not want to have a 100% electric unit limited to 3600 watts!

On most trips we can run AC, water heater and fridge on 30 amps but every once in awhile the post breaker will trip and we have to put the water heater on gas. If you are using the stove, microwave or anything else, there could be an issue with 30 amp. We do like our gas for heat and cooking though.

50A power is actually 2 legs of 50A power for a total of 100Amps. A little over 3 times what's available from a 30A service.

When we had a DP motorhome we had a power management system that would shed less important load to be sure the important stuff stayed on while connected to 30A service. If the unit is wired for 50A service it is likely because it is needed. You will be limited to what you can simultaneously use when plugged in to a 30A service.

Running the fridge, water heater, and 1 air conditioning unit would typically be a non-issue on 30AMPS.

Where you'd have to deal with (personal) power management is if you have a 2nd AC unit and/or when using any cooking appliances. Then, I'd just make sure the water heater is off and only use one of them at a time.
