F150 Ecoboost vs F250 Diesel mileage

I have been pulling my equipment trailer for my business with an F150 3.5 Ecoboost for 3 years now and averaging about 8.7mpg on 87 octane. I got rear-ended last week and the Ecoboost will be in the body shop for at least two weeks so yesterday I rented a brand new F250 diesel to fill in. Does anyone want to hazard a guess on the what my fuel economy with the diesel will be? I am sure that I will find it very interesting.

The trailer is a 22' flatbed deckover with 60hp tractor, stump grinding attachment and front end loader. The tires are water filled. I have never weighed it but I am pushing the 11,200lb tow rating of the F150. I mostly drive 2 lane county roads with rare forays on the interstate and then only for a few miles.

Both trucks are crew cabs with 6.5ft beds and 4wd so fairly even there. I am going to try my best to drive the same. The EcoBoost was never power limited and don't expect the diesel to be either.

It appears to me that everyone I have heard claiming that Ecoboost pickup engines (non High Output version) have to run diesel are trying to justify their decision not to buy one.

It just might be that some might want a truck that weighs a ton and a half more, gets good mileage, can have a larger tank installed for incredible range and can handle a large trailer with a much higher degree of safety.

You are free to do whatever you like. I just had a chance to make a comparison that I had never seen before and thought that others might like to know what I have learned from it. Your groundless insults on a subject that doesn't even concern you are what have me offended.

What's the point of the comparison if you are going to handicap the Ego Boost with cheap gas.

That is the point that some just don't want see.

Then go by an Ecoboost and you will find out that a lot of what you are saying just isn't true and it will tow the rating of the F150 fine with 87 octane. Until then, you are only going on assumptions that you want to be true instead what is actually true.

I have been quoting the owners manual, Ford says the things that you question.

Yes, you have been quoting the owners manual but you don't seem to understand the difference between "It will perform slightly better with premium" and "It will self destruct without premium". Either that or you can't grasp the concept that I am a tightwad and am unwilling to spend the extra money for premium but I am willing to live with the reduced performance.

The transmission does indeed go thru a learning process. With the driver playing with the manual shifting, that process might be disrupted. Also, you are not to tow for 500 miles, so again that disrupts the learning and is abuse of a new engine.

It is a rental and had 750 miles om it when I got it. What happened before I got it is a mystery to me.

Update on the diesel:
I have been staying closer to home and got into some hilly territory. At 209.7miles I have dropped to 10.7mpg.
I really don't like the shift pattern of this truck. It wants to lug the heck out of the engine while going up hills at low speeds and I keep forcing downshifts. Then, it wants to drop to 2nd or first going back down. I am finding that I prefer shifting manually. Being a Ford me Ecoboost is somewhat that way but not as severe. The F250 really isn't as stable as I had hoped when using a weight carrying hitch. I am going to try putting the weight distributing hitch on and see how I like it.

Is the Ford tranny a learning one? Maybe you need to drive it like you stolen it for a while, so it learns what you are doing with it?

My browser says the title is “F150 Ecoboost vs F250 Diesel mileage”.

Maybe it’s time for a visit to the eye doctor.

Why would one not want optimum performance?
I use this truck to generate income, not create unnecessary expenses.

How can one accurately compare Ego Boost performance to the F250 diesel unless the Ego Boost is delivering optimum performance?
It is doing well enough on 87 octane and that is how every owner that I know drives it.

The title of this thread is Ego Boost vs. F250 Diesel.
My goal was to present an honest comparison and make it entertaining at the same time but it sounds like I have offended someone's ego. My apologies for that but it is what it is.

That is the point that some just don't want see. Penny wise, pound foolish.

And no, I don't have the F150, instead I chose a more capable F250 diesel.

Believe it or not, I do understand that heavy throttle, higher temperatures and low octane gas causing ******** ignition timing as well as other adjustments is something that I don't want. Many report poor fuel mileage when towing, gee, I wonder why. Ford tried to keep the recommendation simple, but it is still over the heads of many.
