First long trip with TRD supercharger

We took our first long trip (5000 km) with the Trd Supercharger installed on my 2011 5.7 Tundra. I was absolutely amazed how well this truck pulls our Jayflight 28BHS up the Grapevine and other hills travelling the I5 to Southern California. I read many stories about how well the new half tons tow and must agree that this is true considering you stay at a max of 7500-8000 lbs but cannot say without exaggerating the massive difference bumping torque up to 550ftlbs torque! With the truck never exceeding 3500 RPMs on any hill still holding the postedspeed limit has me eager for our next trip. Are there other members out there running the 5.7 Tundra with this set up?

Most got back from a short trip to Whistler in BC on this Canadian long weekend. Found an incredible RV park super family friendly and lots of trails for hiking and quading. Really having fun with this new power in the BC hills! Truck really pulls without crazy RPMs. We have some monster mountains here in BC that seem to just go on and on and with so many places to see its sure helps being able to move along at a respectable pace. I know the TRD kit is expensive but it's hard to explain how good it feels walking up some BIG hills easily holding 60MPH.

I can't decide which I like more, the SC whine on my Buick or the turbo whistle on my Cummins :).

With RVing being one of my passions and the real reason I went to this website I originally went on line to to research back up lights for my RV. Forgive me for sounding ignorant but I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the centre pin of my 7 prong plug on my truck was prewired ready to hook up. I used LEDs for the low amperage draw which worked without the need for a relay. Made the job very easy. We live on a dead end country road without street lights and backing up with the wife's flashlight guidance never goes as intended! Need I say more!

Glad you love your wine! OOPs! Whine. Had a 500 CAT and got so sick of it after 420,000 miles. They scream so loud you have to roll the windows up in a tunnel. After 2 weeks you are ready to jump out while at the top of a high pass and let er roll.

I followed the TRD SC when if first came out when I bought my '07 Tundra 5.7. Looks like a great setup but too pricy for me. The 5.7 motor is in a very mild state of tune IMO for mileage and reliability (probably) and Toyota could easily get another 50hp with some minor tweaks. They're pretty conservative though.

The SC definately makes the Tundra or Taco the trick to beat in their class.

Mileage is not good on the Tundra whether you have the SC or not. Better with it when towing than without as power is so good that holding speed limit up any grade so far up to 6-7% is easy in 4th gear. As mentioned my trailer GVW is only 7500 and I rarely run with full fresh so my guesses that I'm maxed at 7000. If anybody tells you the Tundra is good on fuel, they are being dishonest but I still think it's a great value to have my house on wheels behind me. I drive a 2013 F150 5ltr footwork and have driven 125,000km in 24 months and that truck is incredible on gas on the hwy and not bad in town butwould not compare it with the Tundra. And the power adder. The Ford is good for 4-5000 lbs then shows its shortcomings whereas the Toyota doesn't show these shortcomings with our TT whatsoever. I'm a Composites raw materials seller and supply to many RV manufacturers and have MANYcustomers and guys willing to share good truck stories. The Ecoboost does great pulling especially in altitudes but gets thirsty also when under constant load. Truth is they all do. Knowing that I'm at the age where I wanted to spoil myself I pay the gas bill and thoroughly enjoy the hundred and 123 extra HP and 149ft lbs extra torque gain over stock. When I talked to the Toyota dealership about the SC install they advised that when damage occurred to SC trucks, other evidence existed that the trucks were used extensively for racing or owners were not happy with 504 hp and actually added other things like under drive pullies etc... 504 is enough for me but I use my truck for pulling, rarely to never for racing. Ok maybe just a couple times!

I've had the TRD SC, headers, and dual exhaust on my 2000 4.7 since 2003 due to the fact that I was really running the engine hard in our western mountains pulling our 5600 TT. The SC/exhaust kit really made a huge difference and a much more comfortable drive. I no longer had to shift down two gears to climb a 6% grade and I didn't have to go full throttle going up on ramps.

I no longer have the TT, put I still enjoy punching the Tundra just to hear that SC whine, sweet exhaust sounds, and the great accelleration. After 12 years, the engine and trans are both doing just fine, thank you.

Toyota has been supplying the TRD kit for the 5.7 since 2007 and when installed by them the vehicle warranty remains in place for the entire drive line for the factory term. In 80-85F temps, the trans temp guage does not move from normal nor does the engine temp. The Supercharger has its own inter cooler and reservoir. I notice that even in a strong headwind, which I hardly notice compared to pre SC throttle is not being pushed. In fact it seems like the truck works far less than it did prior. You are so right about the trans being the weak link and I see so many folks towing in gears higher than they should not using common sense when approaching a hill or climb! I have always believed that it's better to drop a gear before the trans goes under load and manually control it with respect and have been successful to not have to donate a pay check to the local shop! if it wasn't for the warranty on the truck remaining, I would have been far more apprehensive to add this to what I feel was a high priced half ton. We plan to use the rig a lot this summer and will keep a progress report coming if members show an interest. Cheers

That sounds like a great set up! I hope that you where not overheating the engine or transmission. I can only wonder how long the transmission will last with 550 foot pounds of torque, and the applied higher than average horsepower of towing a trailer for long distances.

Normally pickups only put out the rated HP for the 7-8 seconds it takes to get from a stop sign to freeway speeds, then will be at 1/4 throttle or less for a long enough time that the engine will not overheat. But towing a trailer, and running 50% of full throttle for 30 minutes into a headwind can warm things up a lot more.

Good luck, and have fun camping!
