First tow with 2014 Ram 1500 Hemi

Just got back from first trip with new truck and although I miss the payload capacity of the 2006 Mega Cab, I am amazed at the fuel efeciency of the 2014 Hemi and 8 speed transmission.
I averaged 13 mpg while cruising at 60 on our 250 mile trip through the plains of FL. Just set the cruise control with tow/haul and let the computer do the rest.
I was concerned about having a smaller gas tank on new truck (25g vs 35g) but my 06 Mega Cab only averaged 9mpg while towing same trailer. Glad to have similar range of 300 miles between fill ups.

Was also happy to test out the Mopar intigrated brake controller. Works great and love seeing brake display in the dash. Even keeps track of miles while towing trailer and has several slots for saving settings on multiple trailers.

Your old Mega Cab should have had LESS payload capacity.

No way. The 06 1500 mega cab had 2,500 payload It was a 3/4 ton (8 lug) truck with 1500 badge. Barely squat with trailer.
My new 1500 only has 1,500 payload. Smoother car like ride when not towing.

OK, Didn't realize it was an 8-lug 3/4 ton in disguise. Calling it a 1500 is a bit misleading.

Yeah the old 1500 Mega Cab had the 3/4 ton frame with 6000 RAWR 8510 GVWR and load E tires.
Same with the '00-'06 1500HD GM with a 8600 GVWR and 6084 RAWR load E tires 6.0 engine and the 4L80E tranny.
Great 1500 size tow vehicles.

Nice tow mileage with that Hemi. 🙂 I have a 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel and have been getting between 14-16 mpg towing. Getting 13 plus mpg towing sure beats the old 9 mpg TV from the 90s use to get towing.

Towing what? Fill out your sig so others know your setup.

Hand calculated MPG, but my display is usually within .5 MPG each time I calculate mileage.

I only ask because the MPG displayed by RAM trucks are usually um, lets say overly enthusiastic 🙂

Hand calculated. Filled up when we started trip, filled up 250 miles later and only used just over 19 gallons.

Very nice. You need to update your signature.

RAM does not have a bad choice in any of their trucks as far as engine/transmission combo. Would be a hard choice for me if I was looking for a 1500.

And Scott, my 03 computer display was never accurate for MPG. My '12 is always dead on.
