Door latches very similar to that design have been used on pretty much ALL Ford US products for well over 10 years. Sounds like it was "cost reduced".

I have a 2016 Explorer Sport. No recall, and I've never experienced any smells etc.

🙂 Hi, on the F-150 forums, there are plenty of complaints about door latches. A recall is welcomed. This does not effect my 2014 model.
