Fridge

We've been on the road for a couple weeks. I noticed that the fins on my Dometic fridge are developing ice cycles. I try to keep the temp around 10 for the freezer. What temp do you keep the freezer and do you ever defrost the fridge?

Install one of these fans. No ice and more even temps, makes fridge more efficient.

Just installed one myself.

I keep my food section at 38*F........fridge thermostat uses the thermistor in food section as temp sensor for cooling cycles.

Freezer should be 0*F or less and food section 40*F or below

*Icing of fins in food compartment is due to:
*Leaky door seals....dollar bill test (5,10,20 etc work also)
*Lookie lou ......holding door open looking for something. Get in/get out
*Fin drip pan drain tube either NOT in drain cup (Norcold) or plug in end of tube missing (Dometic)....warm air gets pulled back inside food compartment
*High humidity.......Run A/C so inside of RV is less humid
Is it time for your medication or mine?

I keep mine as cold as it can get. Frost build up is because moisture gets inside the refrigerator or freezer and then freezes. There may be nothing wrong with your seals, just opening and closing the door allows moisture to come in and get trapped.

Simple solution is to 1) turn the refrigerator off and let the ice on those fins fall off. Then dry everything with a soft towel. It should take about 30 minutes or so. 2) clean the seals on your refrigerator and freezer door. The smallest amount of dirt can cause it to not seal good and allow air in.

If the seals are clean and good, then the frost is simply forming because of opening and closing the door. Nothing you can do about that except defrost it every now and then.

I don't know what the freezer temp is, but things stay frozen. I set the refrigerator section to stay between 35 and 40 degrees. Only see ice on the fins if it is really humid out and we are in and out of the fridge a lot. On my fridge, that's a setting of 4 out of 5 on the temp adjustment with 5 being the coldest.

you may have a leaky seal on your door(s) allowing air in to create the frost on the fins. I understand that you can check for a bad door seal by placing a dollar bill half in, half out and if you can pull the bill out with little or no resistance, you have a bad seal. Of course this requires you to try this many times so that you check the complete seal.'

We have a residential fridge so my temps probably don't apply to yours.
