Fuel Mileage with TC

Yahoo! On the last trip we got 14.8 MPG! Oh man, it was so easy pulling into Wally World to buy my bicycle a light. We were not dragging boat nor bike trailer. If my mind serves me right we got a little over 11 when we took the boat on a previous trip. We shall find out real soon about the bike trailer as we will be towing it on a trip. We enjoyed our fiver but downsizing to the TC has been a good move for us.

I generally get 12-14.5 depending on speed and elevation changes. My truck in my signature is 3.73.

On our Alaska trip we averaged 11.5 mpg overall. Since our return, I learned about keeping the revs below 2000rpm and speed at 62 mph the tach reading 1850rpm. Which has increased our mileage to 13.5 mpg average. Headwinds reduce it, mountainous terrain also knocks it down a bit. With fuel prices as they have been slowing acceleration and cruising speed has cut costs.

Just got back from a 600 mile trip with my 1997 F250 with the 460CI V-8 and a 4.10 rear end. I have a Lance 1010 camper on it. Towed my Jeep Wrangler. Got 7 mpg average. The wind was blowing up a storm both ways - even had dust clouds on 395, vis reduced to 100 feet or so. A diesel might do better but as I only drive the camper about 10,000 miles a year it would take 100 years to pay for it with fuel savings.

James, How many miles on your diesel? Ours is still new and getting around 12.5 @ 65-70 with a fully loaded AF996. I hear that they improve on mileage as they age, hope I heard right!

The difference between 60 MPH and 65-70 MPH could explain the difference between 12.5 and 14 mpg.

To the OP, on a 4,443 mile trip, I averaged 14 MPG at 60-65 MPH

PS: CAJW, I had around 18,000 on the truck at the end of the trip

I agree on a litte more speed while loaded being a mpg killer. I've since backed it down and hope to see a little improvement.
Kerry - totally agree, we're hauling a beast of a rig, getting better than 12 is fairly decent in my book.
Sheriff- Good point. I've updated my profile to show 3.73 rear.

I have been getting 14-14.5 with just the camper on and loaded. When I flat tow my Jeep I get between 11-11.5 and when I tow my boat it drops to 9-9.5. All of this when towing is at 55-60 mph, and 60-65 when not towing.

Good point. Mine is a 3.73.

Are you saying that your 4.1 got 20% better mileage?

My old 460 (at nearly 270k miles) got me 9.5mpg with the camper...stuck to 55 or 60 mph. 🙂 I am hoping it won't be too affected once I hook up a trailer and load up the jeep on it as well. 🙂

We average 10 to 11 with a F450 Ford 6.0 diesel caring a 990 Arctic Fox. We also pull a 10 foot open trailer with a Harley TriGlide trike.

Hrm... Best I ever got was 9.8 on my last trip, but that had a ton of downhill leaving Yellowstone going east to Cody. I averaged 8.3 to 9.2 driving through Yellowstone and once I left yellowstone, my fuel economy dropped back off to 7.0-7.5.

On my last trip, I spent roughly $5500 on fuel to travel roughly 10,000 miles, or roughly $0.55 a mile if I'm doing my math right :).

11.7 mpg with the TC - averaged over 40,000 miles. Many of these miles spent on very poor roads, hence going slow.

16.1 mpg empty. To be noted is we live at 8,700 feet in Colorado and spend a fair amount of time going up and down the mountains at 70 mph.

GMC Sierra 2500, 6.0L gas.

Cheers,
