Good Trailers that weigh 3500 lbs or less.

Our brother-in-law is looking to buy a trailer he can pull with his Ford Edge. Ford says the Edge has a towing capacity of 3500 lbs. We're wondering if anyone can recommend a brand/model of a trailer that you have personal experience using. Thanks.

Escape 17B. With options and full fresh water about 3,000 lbs. Having said that, most people prefer to not tow quite so close to the limits.

Hard-sided folding trailers such as Aliner, Chalet, Trailmanor. They also provide excellent mpg.

So-called towing capacity is less important than payload. That is the difference between what the vehicle actually weighs (with people, full fuel, hitch components and junk) and the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) on the door sticker. Forget "dry" weights on trailers and go with the GVWR for the trailer. Typical tow-behind travel trailers will put about 12% - 13% of their gross weight on the tongue.
