Hinge is killing our backs!

My wife and I have a travel trailer that has a pop out like a pop up camper. The hinge digs into our mattress and we can feel it when sleeping. Any ideas on what to put between the mattress and the hinge to help our back? So far we have used an air mattress on top of the mattress that came with the camper. But, that removes the headspace we once had.

I would use the plywood idea, but do it with carpet padding. "fix" the hinge and get a little insulation for free.

This is what I was thinking. Buy a piece that's the same thickness as the hinge, cut it to the size and shape of the bed frame, then cut across it where the hinge would be. The plywood should raise your mattress up high enough to clear the hinge. You'll have to stow the piece that is part of the fold out somewhere, but, that should be a minor problem.

I like the mat idea from Walmart.

Just looked at the OP's profile, it's a 2002 Palomino Stampede 235SL with a hybrid style bed on one end (there is a picture there too). I'm not familiar with Palominos so a picture of the hinged area would help.

Here's a video of one, if you pause it at :26 you can see the hinge. Looks like it's on the outside if so is there a hump or some sort there that's the problem?

can you remove the hinge and recess it? maybe even turn it upside down so the barrel is pointing down into the wood.

What about just a piece of styrofoam across it. As thick as you need it to be and make two pieces... then put them on BOTH sides of the hinge so the hinge is recessed but still works. You might have to tape the styrofoam so it doesn't breakup. Sears sells a sticky pad for floor area rugs. Maybe sandwich the styrofoam inbetween two of those to keep them intact and help them stay put.

What is the year, make, and model of your hybrid? We got our second HTT this summer. Both Jaycos, and on both the hinge is recessed below the bed deck. A strip of rubber covers the gap.

What you described is called a Hybrid. There is a Hybrid section of the forum, maybe the moderator can move your post.

I installed carpet stick on squares on our PULL OUT POPUP beds. This helped us alot on our setup making them warmer in the cool months.

I'm surprised the full door drop down hinge would be under your bedding. You would think it only be at the start of the bedding.. Really haven't looked that close to the way the HYBRID doors drop down. I always thought that was a great idea however with the beds folding down from the outside instead of being pulled out from the inside like my POPUP does.

What type hinge. Most are piano hinge. You might look for a replacment hinge that does not stick up as high.. Also Walmart and others sale exercise mats that are about an inch or so thick made from very dense foam. We used a couple cut to fit on the bed of our PU. They will cover up many things and give just a bit more comfort over the wood..
