Can I assume that only a long bed will do for a 5th Wheel?

Long bed... bigger fuel tank.
This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

My short bed works great with a fifth wheel. Some on here advise to get the long bed and not compromise. The reality is it's a compromise either way with differing pros and cons. My truck is my daily driver and it needs to fit in tight parking lots and garages. Not to mention down some tight forest service roads when camping and hunting. A short bed is much better in those areas. I don't feel like it's a negative at all with a fifth wheel. The negative is simply less cargo space which admittedly hurts at times with a large family.

I have never had a problem backing into any parking space with my long bed dually or driving it down any forest service road or driving it in the city.

Short bed trucks....

reason sliding hitches
reason reshaped front cap on some 5th wheels
reason some style hitches can be installed 'off-set'
reason for extended pin boxes

Although I prefer a long bed truck whether towing 5vr or not SHORTBED trucks can be set up to tow 5th wheel trailers w/o issues

As with any towing set-up adequate measures and equipment must be used.

First of all I think short bed trucks are a waste, but that's beside the point so let's ask this question. How many short bed trucks vs long bed trucks have you seen with dented cabs from fifth whl trailers?

Long bed, or standard bed is best! A short bed, not so much.

No. I had a 144" wb F450 which worked fine and was easier to maneuver than my longer truck.

As long as the cab and the cap don't meet, you're fine.
