The wife and I are looking to buy a tripple slide quad bunk at the end of the month and I have some questions im hoping yall can help answer. I guess the first and biggist is about brands we know the floor plan we want and it seems that everyone is making it but there sure seems to be a lot of differences in pricing and im just not sure why. We are looking the hardest at a 2014 puma 31 dbts mostly because of the price its 3 to 4 k below the equivlant jfight. So im trying to find out what i should be looking for to justify the price difference. Thanks for any advice you can give the new rv guy.

Well as life goes it seem as plans have changed. I found a slightly used 2013 innsbruck 279qbl for about 10k cheeper then the new floorplan we wanted. So after much thought and talk the wife and I have decided to pick it up tommarow (as long as all goes well with my inspection) and spend the next year seeing how much we use it and what we actually need in an rv. If in that time we decide we need bigger, more slides or whatever else i feel I can easly sell this on to upgrade. What yall think.

Thanks you for posting this. We too are shopping. I've fallen in love with the Puma bunkhouses too. Thanks for the info on here about them. IDK what brand we will buy yet, { we still have a few months before we can buy, but I'm doing my homework right now. We're looking at used ones, b/c that's what our budget and needs in a tt negate right now.

Do your homework very carefully on what you can really tow. Not my truck or suv is stated somewhere to tow x lbs. Lots of info on these boards about how to really calculate that or ask and we will show you how to calculate that. Also, spend a lot of time in the trailers thinking about your usage and where you will stow things. All of this is very important to getting the right trailer. Especially the weight thing if you are on a tight budget like most. happy hunting.

Thanks! We have a Dodge Ram 2500 diesel so tow capacity isn't something we really have to worry about. It sits up too high to tow a 5'er and we don't like them for this stage in our life. So far we haven't taken the kids on our looking trips, but when we have $ in our pockets to buy, they will go with us, so we can see how we all fit. I love this forum and all the help it's already given me. DH isn't a member, but I pass on info. He looked up Puma's and told me they have 10 yr roof warranties. I thought that was cool.
Is there a place on this forum for particular brands? I've looked in the search option, but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. We saw a dealership close enough to our area that only deals in Starcraft and the deals were great. I just can't seem to find forums just for that brand, or Puma's either. Thanks in advance for the help.

You'll probably find Puma forum info if you google "forest river owner forum" - I'm guessing Puma will be a subset of that. Good luck with your decision!

If that is the floorplan you like, buy it. You will hear bad and good about every brand out there and I wouldn't pay any attention to it. We have a 2006 Keystone Sprinter and have never had any problems with it yet you will find people who say they would never buy a Keystone product for whatever reason. Ours looks brand new and we hope to get a few more trouble free years out of it. And I picked it out for the floorplan and because it had lots of windows in it as I am claustrophobic. Buy what you like and not what other people say.

Wonderful info on sway control. After much reading i think im going to with my old stile wd hitch and friction sway control. I already have it and have pulled 29bhs sevral times. If I decide that I need more i can always up grade. Now dont get me wrong if I where pulling with lighter shorter trucks I think I would upgrade with out a doubt.

I would recommend the Keystone Bullet series. I'm sure they have 31' TT with the slideouts you are looking for.

The minimum is a diesel pickup for that size.

Haste Maker do you feel that all forest river products are made with the same quality or do you feel that you may have gotten a bad apple. What is you new one?

Yes mine was a new one brought in 2012...I don't know about all the different brand name trailers that Forest River makes, only the one I brought & another one a friend brought (both were Sierra) and both were
poorly made & both were the same model...

this was a good explanation also:

The distribution bar sway controls need hitch weight to work - basically when the truck and trailer is in a straight ahead position the ends of the equalizing arms are centered in mating notches. As the trailer moves left or right the arms ride out of the center position and apply pressure to the slanted sides of the notch, pushing the trailer back to a center position.

This makes the hitch self-centering - the hitch is always pushing the trailer back to center. The only adjustment is the amount of tension you put on the equalizing arms, and it works equally well on dry or slick pavement.

A friction bar resists motion in both directions. If they're adjusted too tight they can actually lock the truck and trailer into a turning position if the rear axle of the truck loses traction. This is why their instructions say not to use them on gravel, dirt or in slippery conditions.

quote--Hitches like the Hensley and ProPride fight sway in a third manner - they move the effective hitch rotation to a point closer to the rear axle so the trailer tracks more like a 5th wheel. With the pivot closer to the rear axle, side forces on the hitch have less leverage to affect the direction of the tow vehicle. They do this by locking the trailer's A frame to the hitch head, so they both move as a unit. Levers inside the head act as a parallelogram, moving the hitch sideways as if the trailer was rotating around a pivot located further forward.
