Needing a spare tailgate

Okay - the truck tailgate is in the garage at home. We're down here in Arizona, the camper is off the truck, and I need to do some hauling.
I need a tailgate.
What are the options for keeping stuff inside the truck bed when you have no tailgate?
What about a couple tons of sand?

It's legally required that you paint the plywood, probably black would be best, or you'll get a fat ticket from the Truck Fashion Police. At worst, the Chrome Shop Mafia will come after you.

The Cargo Bar and the Tailgate Net look like the best short term items. Easy to store and moderately effective.

The sand; the first time I tried hauling sand (two buckets from a front end loader) I constructed a tailgate with 2x4's and plywood. The pile of sand in the bed trapped the plywood. I had cut a hinged door in the plywood to let sand out. The system worked but was a PITB.
The sand was used for a proof of concept - the next load will be a dump truck delivery.

Yesterday hauled a pallet of Straw Wattles - no tailgate and probably scared a few people on the freeway.
Mine was only 7 tall:

Tailgate cargo net. Available at most auto part warehouses...I think even WALMART sells them. Roughly $50.00 for a stronger one (cheap $20.00 ones are available), can be folded and stored easily for future use.

More than strong enough to rest a piece of plywood against to hold in sand/dirt, etc...

I like this idea.

Go 'borrow' a tailgate off of another truck... That seems like what everyone else is doing...

Down at our local auto junk yard place here they have a whole line of tailgates lined up for sale... Must be a good business..

A couple of 2x's would work seated inside and the pressure from the sand should keep them in place.

Depends on high up you need to go but a 2 X 10 will fit in the slots in the bed of my 2013. I presume you might have the same slots in the bed of your truck. That could keep stuff from moving. Then there are ratchet straps that always seem to work for me. Without knowing what you need to haul it's hard to be more helpful.

Go to a big box store or lumber yard. Have them cut a sheet of plywood or OSB to fit the tailgate area.

Use a bar, in the above post, to hold it in place.

I use one of these

cargo bar

but one of these might work too ratcheting cargo bar

Never took the tailgate off our Ford, but did on the Dodge once to haul 35-40 bags of topsoil 40 lbs per bag - the cargo bar held it ok - and if you have two tons of sandbags, they're not likely to move too much forward and back unless you take off really fast.

Just re-read your post - are you saying sand only, not in bags?
