Odd it's almost impossible to find a non-turbo diesel in the modern world. Apparently, the garages are very happy with this?

I think you are stuck in the world of 30-50yrs ago when people would bolt a turbo onto a gas engine never designed for a turbo and bad things would happen.

No, it's pretty straight forward to turbo charge an engine reliably if it was built for turbo from the ground up. The issue here is marketing. A $2k upcharge for a gas engine that put out the same power as the $10k upcharge for the diesel engine doesn't make a lot of sense.

Maybe they want to obsolete the 6.2L and the 6.8L will be more competitive with Ram & Chev.

Problem is the 6.2l is only 40hp & 45ft-lb from the 7.3l. I would assume a 6.8l would be gaining HP and torque...to as you say compete with dodge and chevy.

So if the new engine is within say 10HP and 10ft-lb of the 7.3l, why would anyone pay the upcharge for the 7.3l that Ford just spent big money to develop?

It doesnt make sense unless it’s replacing both engines.
No other mfg has 2 HD pickup gasser engines and no way there’s enough fuel mileage difference unless maybe they’re getting fancy again, unlike the 7.3.

If it was a turbo 6.8 it might be of interest. Personally I would not go gas without some boost since I cross the mountains a lot and am spoiled by my turbo charged vehicles now and before.

I doubt you will see a turbo gas engine in this size range. The capabilities would be too close and undercut diesel sales.

Seems a little ridiculous. 6.8 vs 7.3? Ford should just put one gas motor in, the 7.3 Godzilla, which, so far has proven to be a great engine. That way, they could use economy of scale to keep costs in line.

Are you talking about the old Ford plagued 7.3 Power Stroke. Thanks to my research I saved myself from buying one many years ago and instead went with a real winner. Cheers to the good guys.

"Plauged"? Odd we had a 1992 and would regularly get offers out of the blue for it because they wanted the engine...even though the body was totally rusted out.

Finally the rust got to us and we sold it to circus folk with 265k miles on it but running perfect. They were heading cross country with it the following day.

Ford did make a somewhat confusing move to make their new V10 gas engine replacement a 7.3l V8...leading to your mistaken assumption.

As to the new engine, I'm confused with 6.8l...seems really close to the 7.3 gas, so why?

My apologies. That first article read like a spoof. And it doesn’t really make sense why they’d have a similar large displacement V8. Unless it replaces both with Godzilla power and 6.2 “economy”. Lol

No, he's talking about the 7.3L Ford gas V8 that was introduced just a couple years ago.

I've never heard the 7.3 Power Stroke referred to as "plagued". That's just laughable! I'm not what you'd consider a died-in-the-wool Ford guy, but that 7.3 is one of the best diesel engines ever offered in this country. Look at the prices used Ford trucks & Excursions are bringing with that engine. Amazing, for a 'plagued' engine.

Manufacturer 1 upmanship. Ford had the 6.2 as the base, up in displacement from GMs 6.0. GM upped it to the 6.6 for base engine. Ford had to counter. Most folks realize a few 10ths makes little difference but then you have a lot of obsessed fan boys.
