No Slide Toppers On New Trailer, What Do I Do Differently?

I have a slide topper on my current trailer but my new one doesn't have any. I'm not going to put any on, at least not until I have some experience without them. What changes for me without toppers? Do I need to sweep it before closing it, do I need to dry it after rain before closing it, etc, etc. I know the pros & cons of toppers so I'd also like to know some pros & cons without toppers. Thanks.

I pull out the step ladder and sweep mine off before bringing it in if I'm parked under trees.

More than once this season I have removed some pretty decent sized objects (branches, pine cones, etc.) that would have been really bad for the seal. For the 10 minutes it takes, the effort is worth it for me.

Thanks all, great info. I still have the trailer with the slide topper until next week so this past weekend I kept an eye on campers without toppers as they packed up. Only 1 got on the roof & swept off his slides. I love my topper but after reading these replies I'm sure I'll be happy without. If not, well they can always be installed later.

Okay a bit off topic but for the strange and unusual slide stories; the lens on the ceiling light disappeared. I thought it dropped down behind the couch on the slide. Pulling panels and searching in the deep recesses of the slide I found nothing.

Since I do not have a topper I do like to treat the seals with a conditioner every once in a while. Several months later I ran the slide out and was treating the upper slide seal and presto, wedged under the seal was my light lens. I never had a water leak or other difficulty.

TTs seem to have a very strange sense of humor.

I haven't had any toppers on any of mine. Our current trailer has 2 skylights in the slide out, so a topper would render hem useless. The only time I've had to clean mine was when I was parked under a tree in a storm. I just rinsed off the top and then squegeed it. Once was leaves and the other was pine needles. So in 11 years of having slide outs I only needed to clean it twice!

I did have a "somewhat" strange event a few weeks ago when camped at Brown County State Park (Indiana). The extended week-end we were there it rained, and rained, and rained. When we broke camp to come home, I was able to begin packing up, but everything was wet. I did my best to clean off my slides, but they were still wet. I did get the leaves and sticks off, but there was still water, and even the squeegie couldn't keep up with the rain. I had no choice but to pull the slide in and let the rubber seal squeegie the water off. No problem. Came home all was well.

Once home, I set the trailer up in the drive way, like always, pulled the slides out, plugged in the electric, flipped on the air, set up the television and continued enjoying the camper. (been sleeping in every night this year so far).

Anyway, next day we're sitting there watching television and I look up at the ceiling. It's all spotted like a bazillion bugs crawled over it. I took a wet cloth and started wiping the dirt off. It was dirt, not bug goo.

I then noticed it ran ONLY the length of slide out. Then I look at the ceiling above the space where the other 2 slide-outs sit when retracted. And sure enough the ceiling was spotted with dirt too. It all washed off easy enough, and the ceiling is all nice and white again.

Sitting there watching television I began to question what caused that dirt on the ceiling in the first place. Then it hit me. It had to have come from the wet roof on the slide out and the loose dirt. Once we took of and hit the road from the campsite, the bouncing of the camper must have splashed the wet and dirt from the slide to the ceiling of the camper. It never happened before, and hasn't happened since. But this was the only time I've ever retracted slides while it was still raining.

So, if there is another reason for cleaning the slide roof before retracting, I suppose this is one. It will keep the dirt from splashing on the inside of your camper if it's wet!

I know some do not clean off their slide tops, but if a bird passes over and leaves his memory, and then you slide the slide IN.... do you really want that bird "memory" INSIDE your camper? That rubber seal will not clean everything off you know.

Heaven forbid!!! Bird poop on the roof inside my camper in an area that I will never touch... the horror!

Seriously though, I don't have a slide topper and haven't wasted one second worrying about one. For a couple hundred dollars I can drill some holes in my wall and install one. For a couple hundred more I can pay some minimum wage guy to install it at the dealership. For FREE I can climb on a ladder (or the picnic table, or the bed of the truck, or a large rock, etc) and look before I pull the slide in. I spent $30 on an electric leaf blower to blow off any sticks or leaves or stuff. Haven't lost a second of sleep about it...

Have had no slide toppers since 1st slide in 2006..... never swept anything off, including water never had an issue. Never any water inside.

No plans on wasting money on a slide topper.

If the TT came with a topper fine. Adding one is simply not worth it to me. Just one more thing to go wrong.

My TT came with a manual tongue jack, not much to go wrong and cheap to replace. Likewise all the wiz bangs and whirly gigs on my truck; handy for sure but I would not have ordered them if they were not standard equipment. Indeed I would trade most of them for another 5 miles to the gallon.

Recommendation, get a slide topper.

1. Less chance of water intrusion.
2. Cooler in summer.
3. Top of slide stays clean and does not need cleaning off.

I would never have a slideout without a topper.

As already mentioned each to his own, but after reading of all the brooms, ladders, leaf blowers, etc. I'm glad I have a topper and never give it a second thought. So far in 8 years and close to 600 nites in the trailer I have had the dreaded "flapper" issue TWICE and I carry two sets of the 3" wide nylon webbed luggage belts that I attach together and throw over the topper and secure the ends to the slide to solve that "flapper" syndrome when needed, but have only had to use it once in those 8 years.

I have had to clean the slide top twice. Once when we were camped in the fall woods and had about 6 inches of leaves on it before we left. The second time we camped overnight in northern New Mexico and woke up to 4 inches of wet snow.

Both times I cleaned it with a broom while standing on the tailgate.

Rain does not bother it because it has a nice pitch to it.

Nature can be so dirty sometimes.
Not nearly as dirty as some campers can trash campgrounds!

I use a Worx cordless blower with the gutter cleaner attachment. It keeps the slide top free of leaves and sticks and blows off water too. I use the blower to keep the site clean including outdoor rug and picnic table, etc. Nature can be so dirty sometimes.

I use a cordless leaf blower; works great and also blows off any water.
