Overnite-er in the Hagerstown MD area

For various reasons we errored on not booking our usual pull through KOA over-nighter.

Obviously now we are experiencing limitations. Looking for a July 2nd one night in transit site in the 68/70 MD area. We are flexible, and options can be west or south of this junction.

DW and 8 yr old daughter not as fond of the Walmart option as I am.

Thoughts ?

Thank you.

I used to live near Hagerstown, I would have just let you park at my house. But we moved South a few years ago. An overnight on the Saturday on July 4th weekend is going to be impossible at any CG or SP. All have a 2 or 3 night minimum and will be booked solid. If you are just looking to catch some rest I would try the Wal Mart. Keystone Rv in Greencastle is only 5 minutes on I-81 North of RT 70/81 interchange. They do have a small CG next to the shop. They might have a spot. There is also the Valley Mall which is right at the 81/70 interchange. While I've never seen campers there, you could call the mall office and see if it would be a challenge to park there. I've parked there for a few hours while we had lunch on our way home from visiting family. There is a very small, little known CG called McMahon's Mill not far from Yogi. It's run down and a bit overgrown, but they do have water and elec (although you pay extra to run the AC). I stayed there once and they had a few low limbs that made me wince but no damage. No one stays there so there's a chance they have a spot. They don't advertise and I think they just get what occasional camper they get. Good luck.

But if you want to try your luck on CG's - HGR has - Yogi, easiest to get in and out off 81 but expensive and 3 night min. battlefield KOA (not sure why it's called that, it's nowhere near the battlefield), Greenbrier state park, nice but not too big rig friendly - Saturday's are their busiest days with people coming to the lake for the day. Cunningham falls state park - little out of your way but not too far. And Mcmahon's mill, which is all but out of business but may have a spot for you. That's it for Hagerstown.

On Edit. did a little poking around and it looks like Mr Mcmahon died a few years ago and the Mcmahon's Mill CG seems like it's totally abandoned. Shame, in it's day it was a pretty cool place and had a restaurant and museum on site.

The dealership is Keystone Mega RV, that is where be bought our camper. First let me say that I LOVE this dealership, they are truly wonderful. They do have some hookups behind the building so they might be worth reaching out to see if you can get a spot for a night.

Greenbrier State Park is right off of Rt 70, just east of Hagerstown. It is a very nice state park, we've stayed there a couple of weekends and its very nice, but not full hookups.

Antietam Battlefield KOA is just west of Hagerstown if you want more amenities and full hookups. I haven't stayed here, but we have friends that stay there from time to time.

Perhaps try one of the MD state parks a few miles to the south of 68 or there are some PA parks within 30-45 minutes of 68 to the north. Laurel Hill near Somerset up 219, Shawnee near Bedford up 99, and a couple of others to the East. Any FHU and electric only sites would probably be long gone for that weekend, there should be primitive sites available. Its going to be tough on a Holiday weekend finding a site for one night. Even if you find one they probably have a 2 or 3 night minimum for July 4th weekend.
I have a burn barrel in my yard.

The warning is still on their reservations and the GPSs have not been corrected. The one-lane bridge (and the turn at the end of it) and the 1-1/2 lane roads leading to it are not negotiable by larger RVs. (Was there two weeks ago.) This is also not a KOA we will visit again.

I stayed at the Candy Land in Winchester last year. Right on I-81 and was pretty nice I thought.

Falling Waters Camp Sites just south of the Potomac in WV might be your best option.
Harper's Ferry is pretty far off I81 for an overnighter and Keystone RV no longer rents spaces. Yogi would be good and Candy Land in Winchester 50 miles farther south is nice. The Walmart at I81 and US40 is very popular with snowbirds and I've not heard of any problems. A new Walmart and adjacent Cracker Barrel is just east of I81 at I70 and MD65. Nothing else close comes to mind. Must admit I'm not a fan of WM or CB. Hope you enjoy your trip.
