Palomino bronco Top Problem

My brother-in-law purchased a 2008 bronco pop up camper last fall. He didn't get a chance to use it till now. We unlatched the buckles and started turning the crank. One side of the camper top started going up but the drivers side just made a popping sounds but only raised about 2 inches. There appears to be 4 lift jacks that raise the top. Two are lifting and 2 are just popping. Has anybody out there had this problem? We are leaving on a big camping trip in two days and need to figure this out fast.
Thanks

Thanks for the update. My camper came with two round metal posts that slip around the forward jacks to keep them from collapsing. The rear jacks will not collapse because the door is in the way.
I would show you pics, but I am in Colorado and the camper is in Ariz

The gears in the box where the handle attaches were stripped.Just the ones that drive one side. An rv shop got the parts ordered but they weren't here it time for the campout. They haven't used the camper yet but he didn't think there was any device to lock the roof in the up position. Just held up by these screw jacks in each corner. I would be nervous about this. Hope it doesn't come down at night when they are sleeping.

When my 2008 did that, one of the metal tubes outside had pulled the screws out so the cable inside didn't have anything to push against. I'm pretty sure my son forgot to unlatch that corner before he started cranking though...

does it crank from the outside?if so it is more than likely a winch/cable lift system and a cable may have broken...all lift tubes should be accessible from inside the tc along w/ the cables and winch.
yours is newer so may be different in routing and style

does it crank similar to this?

Roof rot gets the majority of these pop up truck campers so a RV scrap yard might sell the whole gear box for a song.

He's going to have to go to the nearest Palomino dealer and order some parts.

You could probably push the roof up and prop it up on the one side with 2x4's or something, so he could use it this weekend, but that seems a bit dangerous.

If he's going to be alone, he could just sleep on the floor or the dinette. It's no queen bed but it's better than nothing. The only thing he wouldn't have access to besides the big bed is the shower/toilet, if it even has a bathroom...

I hate to say it but you're probably not going to be using this camper on this trip.

I'm not familiar with Palomino's new style lift system. Mine is like Rbertalotto's, the old Heco lift system.

One jack is in cabinet behind the kitchen sink, the other is in the cabinet in back. Get in there and LISTEN while someone cranks. Follow the popping noise.

Are both jacks making the same popping noise, or is the noise coming from one place?

Both jacks popping tells me they're stripped out and probably need to be replaced. On the other hand if the popping noise is coming from one location, that tells me some connection has broken or come loose, and you might be able to salvage the trip if you can isolate it.

It's going to require getting in there and looking though.

Got pics of the "jacks"?

Pics would help,
bronco has used internal lifting, like RoyB and what I call external with outside crank. In my Bronco 800,I had 2 metal supports stored under the bed,so the front could not collapse.
it sounds like one side of the cable came lose from the gears, but I have no idea how to fix.
I would use Buzzcuts idea and use supports for trip then get fixed later.

As you can see by the pic,The cable lift splits right and left at the front.

It sounds like you have a worn gear in the lift mechanism.

On my 1998 Bronco I can see the long straight gear to both sides of the crank handle. My crank is inside, just below the overhead bed.

My Bronco also has a safety latch that will hold the roof up if the handle or gears should fail.

If you look close in this picture you can see the safety latch where the ligting pipes are attached to the gear train

well if you can raise it up from the inside to full height I would cut some wood supports to the proper length and use them to make due for this trip, it's not like you drive anywhere with the pop upraised. get it fixed when you get back.
