Parting Out Travel Trailer

I have a 2007 Four Winds 18B travel trailer that has some bad water damage in the front. I have decided to just part it out and get something else.

My question is how do I go about parting out a travel trailer on someplace like Craigs list. I still owe around $2500 on it so I cannot sell it outright since I have seen perfectly good bigger trailers going for less. How do you list a trailer that you are parting out and how does that usually work? The frig, stove, microwave, etc. have not even been used. The person who sold it to me obviously knew it had problems and I didn't know enough about TT to check what I should have. Any way, want to cut my losses and part it out.

Thanks

IF you have an auction company in your area, take it to an auction, either a car auction or farm auction. have a reserved bid on it say for $3000., at least you will have enough money to pay off the loan , and some for commission fee and the rest is pocked money. Who knows it might sell for $5000.00, The trailer is still fairly new.

It is amazing what people buy at auctions. Actions are "buy as is"

Either way good luck.

It is a matter of how long you can wait to sell each piece, and how much work you'll put intoit, if you want topart it out yourself. Salvage yards may have a TT 5-10 years, selling piece by piece, before they give up on it and scrap what's left as too old to have a market.

If you are thinking of selling the whole thing for parts, coolecting up front, then you are down to a salvage value, probably much lower than your loan balance, because the salvage operator has to consider time value of money, in addition to labor, storage, and selling costs, as he parts it out over 5-10 years.

If you are looking at what you might get parting out over a few months, it will likely be just a little bit of the low hanging fruit, the few parts of high value and demand, like complete working appliances. Youmay have to sell cheap to sell fast.

It's not THAT old...lighten up on the poor guy!

Nothin' wrong with asking a question of a different set of folks than might have seen it elsewhere.

4x4 posted it in the SAME TRAILER forum as THIS thread.

HERE

That IS double posting, and possible may have posted in other forums..

Kind of silly to take an old non-related OLD thread which has been concluded and bringing back from the dead.

It would serve 4x4 better to keep the SAME thread that 4x4 started alive instead of bringing an old thread back to life...

Does anyone know of a wrecking yard / used parts in southern California might be located. Sorry if you don't like the current responses in that thread.

RV "salvage" yards are few and far between and the odds of finding the exact size door is next to impossible since these are specifically made for the EXACT model of RV you have.

I would recommend contacting the manufacturer of your rig FIRST, if no joy then you WILL need to have a CUSTOM door MADE for your rig.

For CUSTOM manufacturing you can contact ALL-RITE.COM , just be sitting down when they give you a quote, it's GONNA HURT :E

I just wanted to post a follow up and close this thread. We had someone buy the trailer so I did not have to part it out. In one week he had it repaired and customized and is ready to go camping. I am very happy someone is getting to use it and amazed at the skills some people have to do this sort of work. Thanks for the posts.

Sorry missed that part about the insurance not paying, but not sure how they get away with that...they are insuring you, not the PO....

Just be aware that if the loan company finds out you are parting the trailer out, they will call the note and make you pay up since the collateral is no longer intact. If you decide to part out, just be prepared to pay off the note if you have to. Only issues will come up if the loan co demands payment and you don't have it.

As I mentioned early the insurance company will not pay a cent on the damage citing the previous owner did not do preventative maintenance to avoid the water damage.

If you have a loan on the unit, it must be insured. I would file a claim with the insurance company for the water damage and see where that takes you. Let the ins. co pay so you can pay off the bank loan and be done with that. If they leave you with the unit then you can go ahead and part it out. I would not start by parting it out because you are damaging the bank's security interest in the trailer, and they can come after you for that.

As an aside, if you do strip it, the frame and running gear can make a great flatbed utility trailer.

I would try e-bay. That new of a trailer someone would buy it for a repair project. Another option is to trade it in to a dealer on a new trailer, they would pay off the old loan.

I have no plans to cancel the insurance. I just want to part out everything I can...sell it and apply it to the remaining balance that I am still making monthly payments on to pay it off quicker. I've already tried selling it as is for over a year with no bites. When it's completely paid off I will sell the remaining trailer with the title to someone who wants to make a utility trailer or something out of. To me that is cutting my losses and moving ahead. The sooner this one is gone the sooner I can get something brand new and start enjoying a travel trailer. Right now it is just sitting and rotting and costing me money in storage and insurance and cannot be used. I think my idea makes perfect sense.

I just bought two bunk bed mattresses from a parted out camper. Due to insurance purposes, I was not allowed in the trailer, but I could stick my head in through the doors to look around. If a part is needed, the owner or a yard worker pulled that part. They advertised it on Craigslist with the rules, etc. They sold the parts as "best offer." They knew how much stuff was new and what it should go for, taking into account damage from the RV being rolled. Best $100 I had ever spent. I'd do it again if I need any other parts.

You have to pay the loan off before you part the TT out. If you cancel insurance it will tip off the bank and they will put their coverage on it at great expense to you. What you are asking is a breach of your contract with your lender. This is a very bad idea. Cut your losses and chalk it up to a life lesson.
