Pros/Cons Chevy vs. Ford 1 Ton Diesel 4x4

I am not intending to start a flame war, but just curious on the pros and cons of the two brands. I am likely going to buy a 2016. I know each must have its "issues" and strengths and each will have its fans and detractors. I am mostly trying to sort out which makes the most sense for me based on what I can learn of each. I have spent some time on the Ford forums and the Duramax forum, but just trying to get other opinions. Any input is appreciated.

GM is the 100% SOLE owner of Duramax, ALL patents, designs, and ALL rights to manufacture and control ALL aspects of the Duramax engines. GM has already made and sold over 2 million 6.6 Duramax and installed engines in vehicles. GM makes the engines themselves rather than simply buying them from another manufacturing vendor like another truck manufacturer does which are then exported to Mexico, installed in the Mexican built vehicle, and then imported back into the USA and Canada to sell.

Cummins12V98, perhaps you should do your research before you post stuff you know nothing about! Most people seem to know so much more about Duramax diesel engines and GM than you seem to based on your posts!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I read just fine and to be clear I used your words above. I guess you did not get the memo the GM engine is also owned by ISUZU. Did you get the memo the Ford engine is made in Mexico?

Cummins12V98,

You read into it what you want to but that doesn't make it so as to the message!

The meaning of my statement is clearly that FCA doesn't own Cummins nor manufactures their own HD truck diesels but only purchases them from a supplier. While both Ford and GM not only owns their own HD truck diesel engines, the patents, and the exclusive rights to manufacture them. Plus, only GM both owns and also manufacturers their own corporate HD diesel engine and does it here in the USA with American workers. Cummins is a stand alone manufacturer and merely sells and exports their manufactured engines to FCA in Mexico for installation into Ram HD trucks and then imports the vehicle into the USA and Canada to sell. Did you miss the word "Ram" as that is what the post clearly was referring to? Reading and comprehension is a very positive attribute that should have been learned early in life! Nit-picking of wording is not a very desirable attribute!

"Cummins only sells their diesel to FCA" FALSE!!! The same assembly line in Columbus makes the same 6.7 for Freightliner.

mich800,

Quote from your post, Bryan:

"With that said I highly doubt changes like that even if there was a merger."

China wants to enter the pickup truck market on the world scene and there's no easier way than to buy an existing manufacturer wanting to sell cheap! Cheap because there's actually so little to sell in the present vehicle lineup for the world market and old decaying facilities with lots of long term debt! The definition of impending demise! NOT a merger but a sale of FCA however may be disguised as a merger for consumer wool pulling. Sergio has begged other manufactures to absorb FCA guised as a merger and you see how many takers or interest they have gotten!

Without Ram Trucks, especially the 2500 and 3500's with the diesel, FCA would have folded before the ink was dry on the Chrysler Corp takeover. It's FCA's major source of sales revenue by far!

Remember that ALL 2500 and 3500 Ram trucks (gas or diesel) are made in Mexico including the 6.4 Hemi or with a very expensive imported engine from Indiana. Mexico is not the USA or Canada where most Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks are sold so there's no financial connection at all. Besides, a 6.7 liter diesel and 6.4 liter gas engine wouldn't sell on the world market outside of North America and Cummins only sells their diesel to FCA and is not owned at all by FCA. Far too large an engine and burns far too much fuel outside North America as there's high taxes and heavy regulations on large displacement engines and the cost of fuel outside of North America is ultra expensive at the pump! Use your noggin, why would China want to keep buying a very expensive engine from Cummins when China can produce for a fraction of the cost and control completely right in their own country? Perhaps you notice that Ram uses the VMI Motori little diesel in the 1500's and NOT a Cummins? Just one of the many things China will mandate changing or no sale and it's not rocket science!

The height of stupidity is doing the same failed thing over and over and expecting different results! You must change the factors of what caused the failure to achieve different results and China isn't stupid!

China has gobs of ultra cheap labor and "several" billion population of potential customers right on their land mass they share with Europe, Asia, and Africa but only less that half of one billion in North America. Wait until you have to wait to get parts for a Chinese company major product like most of us already have experienced! A vehicle manufacturer is only required by U.S. to have OEM parts available for 10 years from model year date. What's the law in China who will then own what is now FCA? Think about it!

Nuff said!

I am not brand-loyal and have owned and towed with all of the Big 3.

Between the choices you offered in your original post, I would go with the Duramax, hands-down.

With that said, all of the Big 3 make great trucks in 2016 and you can't really go wrong.

Based on what I have read here and in other forums, I am inclined to wait and see what both Ford and GM will bring out in the fall. If I like the new offerings, I would then wait a year for the kinks to be worked out of the new models. I am not in a rush to buy. My 2002 F150 FX4 with helper springs works amazingly well with the camper, even though by all accounts, it should be overwhelmed.

It's not a rumor, it's presently in negotiations as FCA doesn't have a sustainable future due to long term debt etc and China is the only one so far to even enter into actual negotiations with FCA. FCA's days are numbered either way! It's not a major share holder proposal but a total buyout/take over and Cummins engines will not be included after take over as China will supply their own diesel engines made in China as they can produce the engines at a fraction of the cost of buying from Cummins. It's one of the major areas of the negotiations along with a total vehicle re-alignment and production locations/plants. Stay tuned!

Interesting! I know for a FACT Cummins is working on the 2019 6.7 for the RAM trucks. I got this from the lady that is working on it at the Cummins factory.

Cummins was also working on the 5.0 V8 for dodge and when Chrysler was handed to fiat that project got killed and VM motori got the green light.

spoon059,

Allison was owned by GM and the Allison Transmissions were developed by GM and used in busses, OTR trucks, and RV's etc. The Baltimore Allison plant is on the northeast side of Baltimore by I-95, White Marsh area. Another plant is in Indianapolis, IN. I've been to both plants in the past for engineering related projects for my engineering business operation.
