Rivian E 1/2 ton charging net for more remote campy spots.

For the younger outdoors bunch that like to get off the beaten trail a bit. Looks like Rivian is trying to identify with them with plans to set up L2 and L3 charging in popular but most of the way trail heads etc. Interesting read.

Jeep is apparently looking at similar ideas but with L2 only...which is probably all you really need.


This would work for those kind of locations. At least for L2. No infrastructure and no licensing. Totally portable. I think some national parks are starting to put these in.

Yah I don't think they did. But just reading some of the scuttlebutt from some of the Rivian enthusiasts are talking about. Some feel that at least the L2 stations may be solar as they would be chimp simple to install. No infrastructure, permits etc. Just permission to locate the charging structure.

I'm not sure how much of a need there would be for level 3 fast charging. Just seems overkill. If its a trail head that suggest a few hours hiking etc. If its full after half an hour and you are hiking for 4 hours you would be tying up the charger for 3.5 hours. Better to keep it at maybe a standard 6 or 8 KW AC level and pick up 30 or 40 KW during the hike etc.

I guess the other questions remain, will they be allowed to put Rivian only accessible charge sites. EG, maybe a code or RFID card so only Rivians can charge there. Not sure that would be allowed on public lands.

I know these are already showing up at some national parks but they are open to everyone.

No idea, but haven't been following that close.

And yes, the 30-45 K was the charging setup.

Not quite true level 2 capability but not too shabby if you're only trying to charge 1 car. Showing several cars connected at once is pretty silly, it's like trying to fill a car's gas tank with a turkey baster.


All true. But remember that these have built in storage as well. Apparently customer configurable. 30 KWH is common apparently. So no problem connecting a few vehicles.

If you watch the video I think they mention somewhere around 250 miles. So divide that by four (a kilowatt takes you about 4 miles) then you end up with around 60 ish kw. But really I’m not sure as that seems about twice as high as I would have thought. Maybe the specs are listed on their site.

I think the power output panel is kinda cool Don. For homeowners with a driveway it could be a backup power source. 120 and 240. We are in a Townhouse so not going to work.
