scissor jack broken ....

I have always had issues with one scissor jack on the TT and now the threaded rod has come right out of the inside end. Luckily I was able to wire it up to get home today. Is this an easy fix or should I just buy a new one. I have also thought of removing both front jacks and using jack stands, good or bad idea ?? :h

Thanks: Joe

So trying to remove the keeper or what ever it was proved difficult so I put the drill to it and added a cotter pin and it is working fine

Thanks all

Joe

Yes look carefully at the end of the threaded rod and you should see a hole drilled through the threads. Take a small punch and hammer and drive out the hollow split pin inside that hole. Take the pin down to Home Depot and look through the specialty drawers in the bolt aisle for a new pin.

You can refer to one of the other jacks to see how to put it all together.

Or buy a new jack and be done with it.

When the roll pin breaks off, they're pretty hard to spot where they were on the threaded shaft. Look at one of the other jacks and you should see a pin on the inboard side of the the threaded rod that holds the washer (like a thrust bearing) onto the rod.

Just drive out the broken pin with a punch and tap in a fresh one. It's an easy fix. Buy a couple of spare pins.

Running the jacks up too hard can shear off the pins, which I learned from personal experience.

Good luck.

Yes, just install a new roll pin and be done. A 50cent fix.

If I understand the question correctly, I had a similar situation. I just screwed the rod back into the nut on the inside of the jack and then installed a washer and kotter pin. Have not had any problems since.

They are cheap enough. Why not just replace it and call it done?

I wouldn't go the jackstand route. First you have to carry them somewhere, and second they don't have the infinite adjustment that the scissor jacks have. (Unless you buy those threaded ones)

I cut the socket off my scissor jack crank, ground 3 flat sides on it and use a cordless drill to put them up and down. It takes about 4 seconds to set a jack this way.
