Steps vs side step bars

I have steps and they do decrease off-roading capability. Are side step bars better? Should I switch?

Call me old fashion, but I prefer full length running boards. May not "look" up to date on todays modern trucks, but keeps everything from being kicked under the rocker panels/doors. Here in upstate NY where salt is king during the winter, you can see trucks after a short bit where snow/ice/salt has been splattered under the doors as that's where it 1st starts to rust out. With running boards don't see it. Plus they offer a HUGE area to step onto. Downside is, no-one makes and box board running boards anymore. My $.02.

LOL! It is much like that. Here is a couple more practical reasons, those loops are hard to find some times with your feet, not always in the right spot for different folks. If you have a dog, they don't work as well as boards or nerf bars do for getting the dog in the back seat of the truck. Hanging low like that they could get hung up off road. Lastly, like an ugly shirt, they detract from the overall look of the pickup/person.

I don't know which is better, but those single steps are really ugly, and seriously detract from the looks of the truck.

Anything that mounts to the body is not preferred in my truck builds because I live in areas where there's a lot of salt and deicer used in the winter.
Holes drilled in body introduces a point of body corrosion.

Good point...however Fords already have the holes, pull the rubber plugs, and add the oem bars. I'm thinking a late GM would be the same.

Not many use the old frame mounted nerf bars, on newer trucks.

OMG....YES, forget about capability, those look awful, on an otherwise nice looking truck!!
