Storing WD hitch when parked

Do you remove your WD hitch head when you are parked?
What do you do with it?

My Curt head weighs about 80# I can lift it ok and set it on the tail gate of my truck but that is as far as it gets. lol

I would like to keep the head and bars out of the weather and out of sight when camped for weeks at one spot

I guess I could get a locking hitch pin and leave it in but it is a nuisance to walk around and when I forget it is a pain!!!

Curt has a sturdy canvas bag I was thinking of finding a way to lock it (not just the bag) to my trailer and leaving it under the trailer tongue.

Ideas??

Leave it in the receiver if just for one night. In the passthrough if longer. Bars in the passthrough for both.

Have not walked into it yet. Neither has DW.

When out camping, the hitch stays locked to the receiver and the bars are locked in the storage box. When stored, hitch is in the garage and the bars are stored in the storage box.

When out camping, I keep the hitch connected (locked in place) to the hitch receiver of the truck. The weight distribution bars slide into some square tube that I welded up under the tongue and out of sight. They lock in place. Had a friend that had his weight bars stolen at night from transients at the beach one year. He had his bars just sitting on the ground under his tongue. Mine are locked up with my custom latch I made.

When the trailer is stored away, the hitch comes off and gets tucked away in the corner of the garage.

When camping,We put our whole Equalizer hitch and bars in the front pass through storage area of the TT so it is locked up. At home, I keep hitch in garage and sway bars in TT storage area. Don't need that 50 lb hitch sitting on the back of my truck where it is tempting to try to steel and someone can ruin their shins by walking into it or it sticks out if parking.. Just lock it up in the TT.

The problems with the Hitchgrip are; you can't install in the coupler and they might damage the ball where the hard grip points bite the ball.

I only use the HitchGrip to install or remove the hitch from the receiver, never the coupler. Since you mention it I went out and cleaned off the ball where the hard points touch it. I could not find any marks made by the HitchGrip. The ball steel and chrome is very hard.

I built a rack that I store my hitch on if we are going to be camping in one place for several days. I use a HitchGrip to lift the hitch. It takes most of the strain out of lifting the hitch. When the hitch is in the truck it is locked down with a chain. The rack is padded with carpet and slides in easily from the tailgate.

The spring bars are mounted on each side of the tongue and are locked to the safety chains. I know this method will not completely protect the bars from theft but will slow a thief down.

I can carry the head with one hand and latch it in the coupler with this tool.

Then I turn it around and lock the coupler.

The bars go in the added toolbox.

The tool can be used to reinstall the hitch.

I LIKE THAT TOOL TOO! WHERE CAN I GET ONE?

I take the head and the bars and put it in the front pass through. I got sick of dealing with grease on the dogs and my pants. I could just put a bag over it, but if I'm staying for more than one night I always take it off and put it away.

I'm like the Ice Chest Idea. They're very affordable, with handles and wheels it could be easily be locked and stored under the trailer.

The weight distribution head and ball go into the truck receiver in the spring and I take it out in the fall after winterizing the trailer. Bars go in a canvas bag in the pickup bed under the tonneau.

When the RV is in storage, the hitch is in the back of the pickup in a bin. When camping, it's locked on to the receiver.

When not towing, the bars are in the passthru.

I have an old cooler that is the perfect size for the head and some spare parts. I put the cooler on the ground under the head, then pull the head and place in cooler. It is easy to handle then utilizing the handles on the cooler.

I'm lazy. I leave everything attached to my TT and tie a pink ribbon around the end when camping.

I would like one of those lifting tools. We have to keep our TT in a storage lot back home, so I take the hitch & bars home.

As in Lynnmor's post with pictures, that is just what I do and was trying to describe in my previous post. However I do not have the handy handle. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I also put a pad lock on the trailer hitch latch and cover the whole hitch assembly with a black plastic garbage bag, secured with a bungee cord. Protects it from the weather and prying eyes.
