I would never have thought in a million years that someone would do a story about my family......ever! Nobody wanted to interview us when we had a travel trailer. This truck camping stuff is cool. CLICKY

Nice article.

Very cool article and pics.
The most important statement was about the lady telling them not to wait and travel now.
After several tragic losses of young friends last year, I'm not waiting. Time to enjoy life now.

Mike,

How often have you used the 4WD on your adventures? I thoroughly enjoyed the article and I am extremely jealous. I have taken quite a few trips in my 1998 Lance Legend and 1997 F350. In 2013, I took a 4,500 trip from KY to Utah and all places in between. One of my biggest regrets is not staying at remote places. Since then, it's been 100% boondocking for me and the DW. My camper is fully self-contained with solar and a propane generator, so we really have no need for campgrounds.

My DRW F350 truck is only RWD with 4.10 gears and a limited slip differential so I believe that I can traverse many dirt roads without getting stuck. I know my limits so I am not inclined to push them too far. I have Goodyear Duratrac tires that are new, so that will help get me out of trouble should trouble find me.

Without getting into the whole 2WD vs. 4WD debate, I am just curious as to often and under what circumstances you needed 4WD to get out of a jam? Most people use 4WD to NOT get stuck but often admit they weren't sure they needed it at all.

One question, do the roads leading off the Beartooth really require 4WD or can - some, a lot, most - of them be done with a 2WD? Any non-secrets you could share would be welcome (How bad are bugs?)

Thanks,

Del, I believe most could be done with 2 wheel drive in late summer but I have only scratched the surface. Believe me I'm no expert. Mike's Campground for sure 2 wheel drive or any car for that matter. As for the bugs, the mosquito's can be horrible but by 10PM it's cool enough that they all disappear. Makes the campfire quite enjoyable. Here in Michigan the buggers are out and biting all night.

Hey that's really great Mike, you got it all goin on. Why shouldn't there be a story about the travels of Mikes family?! It was a very enjoyable read, not to mention fabulous pictures!!

What a great article and pictures. My wife and I drove over the Beartooth Highway for the first time this past summer as we left Yellowstone. WOW!! We promised ourselves that we would return and do some camping, and your pictures sure are making that promise seem more of a Need.
