Anything over 4500 lbs. has to be inspected. Our friends had gotten pulled over for not having a race car trailer inspected in TX. Now with us having 1 tag it has to be done at the time you get tags for the trailer.

With no brakes, they checked all the lights and made sure the hitch was correct.

I did not have to get my 8' single axle 1,500 lb rated utility trailer inspected to register it this year.

Go to this page and select Trailers or Mobile Homes. It says that the criteria is Exceeding 4500 pounds Actual Gross Weight.

Do you get a sticker, like in the truck? My dealer never mentioned this. Could this have been done before I took possession, how would I know?

No sticker. They do give a sheet of paper showing the inspection was done. And it is registered with the state so that they can look it up on their computers when you apply for new registration.

No, not in all states. We buy one plate and it is good as long as we own the trailer.

They were issuing stickers but now it's part of the registration, just like your truck. No more inspection stickers on vehicles.

I have a single axle 3000# utility trailer without brakes that does not require inspection. I have a dual axle 7000# utility trailer with brakes that does. I do not know where the line is drawn.

It's a very simple inspection. The place where I took mine just looked at it (I had already turned on the lights) asked me to tap the brakes to check the brake lights, he checked the turn indicator lights, and that was it. In and out in 15 minutes.

Inspection is for ALL trailers EDIT - rated over 4500 pounds.

When trying to fix a registration error I was forced to inspect my little 10 foot single axle box trailer. Granted the inspection was $7.

With no brakes, they checked all the lights and made sure the hitch was correct.

If over 4,500 lbs (I think) you have to have current inspection before you can register it. Same as our cars and trucks. New requirement this year to get registration. Inspection has been required for years but not enforced. Now you have no choice.

But not much to it. Checked tires, lights, and that it had a breakaway switch (did not check to see if it worked, just that it was there). Did not even check that the brakes worked.

BB_TX,

What kind of trailer did you get inspected, where, and how long ago? We had the pre-registration inspection done on our fifth wheel in Polk County, TX, in September. Lights, breakaway mechanism, tires and other equipment were checked... then I had to drive the rig with the inspector in the passenger seat and run it through a brake test on a marked stretch of pavement. The rig had to stop within "X" number of feet from a specified speed (I don't remember the speed or distance).

There is an exception to the inspection. If you are living in the trailer and it does not go traveling, you can get a waiver to the inspection. Found that out when I asked them when they started making you get the trailer inspected before you could get the new license tag.
