The price of new trucks is beyond comprehension!

It was 42 years ago today, seems so long ago, yet still a strong memory in my head, a milestone I reached in my humble beginnings into the home renovation industry building solariums and such.

Yes, it was on this day, October ten, nineteen seventy eight when I had been only 4 years into my lifetime career when I worked my way to being able to purchase my first brand new truck!

Yup, 10-10-78 I drove off the lot of Phillips Chev - Olds in Penticton BC driving my nice shiny new 78 Chev 3/4 Ton Camper Special.

As I pulled out of the lot and turned left on to Westminster Ave and headed east towards home, I though I had lost my marbles, that I am a total idiot.

Who in their right mind would pay $7714. For a new truck. All taxes, fees, dealer prep and all the rest of the junk in came to $8,109.70 out the door...... Bob, you are out of your mind! I kept saying to myself. Financed it on the never never plan I did. How will I ever pay for it? I was barely 24 years old.

It was a great truck, I had it for 26 years and about 527,000K on the odometer when I retired it, still in decent shape.

Hmmmmm......

42 years later, my 2007 truck in sig is getting worn out. 408,800K on the clock and I am eyeing the shiny new trucks on the lot.

92 grand $$$$$$$ for something similar with a few more bells and whistles.

No, just no! That's what, about a dozen times the price I paid back then?
Gosh how can they justify that?

Wow! Just wow. Amazing how expensive pickups have become. All these fancy gizzmobops they have, someone has to pay for all that I guess..

Guess I'll just keep fixing what I have. It was $1423.77 yesterday for a water pump and a U-joint. Expensive!

Oh well, that's life! ๐Ÿ™‚

My story of the day.

The problem is lack of supply. Where are the 2022 models?

As long as the economy keeps trying to keep up with the massive inflation, this will not end. But if it ends abruptly, it's not going to be pretty for alot of "gotta have it now" people!

If I thought I could get almost $100k for a mid grade mid size hybrid chit box, I would too! If the market bears that, then the consumer is to blame.
No different than every Tom Dick and Harry advertising their 200k miles diesel pickups for $30k. (I thought I was cutting a fat hog last year when I got $27k for a 190k mile diesel pickup, even though it was a "holy grail" model, lol.)
If you offer me too much money for something, I'm not one to kiss a gift horse in the mouth.

Trucks are not the only vehicles getting a high price.

Toyota RAV4 hybrid $96,000

But that's beyond MSRP by a wide margin and not indicative of what even the manufacturer suggest as to the sales price via MSRP.

My first pickemup cost $3350 a Chevy Luv 2wd 50 years ago.
2002 Ford one ton 7.3 cost $35k. It is worth around $20k.
Next truck will be a an F-250 XL diesel but it will be awhile.

When I ordered my 1999.5 Ford F-350 (in Jan.'99) I had two engine upgrade options:
1) V-10=$285
2) PS diesel=$4,000

I ordered said Ford with said PS engine/6sp manual/4WD/manual everything/crewcab/and AC.

Three months later it was delivered.

The window sticker said $37,600 (rounded).

My invoice total cost was $29,500 (rounded).

I plan to do the same thing with a 2026 F-600.

Ordering a truck between now and the next 3+ years? NO WAY!

Yes, agreed!
I am told I could still get 20 - 22K for mine! I think that is absurd....
I paid 500 bucks for my first used pickup many years ago, a 67 GMC 3/4 ton

What you are "told" you can get and what you "can" get are two different things altogether. You may get what you're told selling private but getting what you're told in a book or on a website from a dealer is mostly BS. KBB tells me my 2016 2500HD with 50K miles in great condition with no wrecks is worth $37K trade but the most any of the 15 or so dealers I visited would offer, in real numbers with no shell game BS, is @ $30K.

We priced our truck and 5th wheel to sell earlier this year. We had the trailer priced at $25,000, and the truck at $18,500, which is what I paid for it 15 years ago. We had many offers to buy the truck, one guy said he would buy both to get the truck!! It's a 2001 Dodge diesel dually quadcab, with 119,000 miles, and the six speed manual. Apparently more desirable than I had thought.

Ended up we sold the trailer and kept the truck, and now using it to pull our new-to-us 5th wheel.

Yeah - I just KBB my truck - 2015 - and it values it at more than I paid new. But probably not get that in trade anyway, it's just numbers.

Makes no sense to sell it or trade it and buy a new one. Don't want to do it anyway, truck does everything it should and only has 62K miles on it. Just put new tires on it.

Right?
Idk how long the โ€œshortageโ€ is gonna last, but beginning to think the hyper inflation, seems like itโ€™s reached that level, is going to become the new norm.
I also havenโ€™t really tracked any ridiculous adds to see if the vehicles sold quickly. (Good indicator that asking price or close to it was achieved)

But can confirm that the list of people not going back to work doesnโ€™t appear to be shrinking. At least not in my industry.
This whole pandemic thing has turned many people into lazy bags of _____ and is a major contributor to what we see on the retail end of things. With supply chain issues and inflation.
Iโ€™m currently fighting through 7 figure losses on just a couple construction projects without any relief from the same agencies that put me/us in this place, in the first place.
Things arenโ€™t done getting weird by any stretch of the imagination, unfortunately.
