Thinking about buying a 5.7 Dodge half ton truck.

I have 80,000 miles on my truck and I'm getting ready to buy a new one. I have a Crossroads 27RB pull trailer that is light in weight. Loaded it most likely tops out around 6,000 pounds. That's just a guess. I pull it with a Toyota Tundra with the 5.7 engine, Crew cab and 4 wheel drive. It does a lot of shifting but gets the job done. I'm getting on in years and do not picture myself moving into a large 5th wheel trailer and will stick with pull trailers. I might buy a new one. I was looking into buying a diesel Ford 3/4 ton but a couple of friends have 5.7 Dodge Hemis ( half ton) and love them. The new version, 2017, comes with an 8 speed trans and a towing capacity just over 10000 lbs. Anyone have anything to say about this vehicle? Since most of my driving is around town and only 10% or less is towing the trailer, this might be a better option for me.

I have a 2015.. don't think there are many changes, 3.93 gearin, 32gallon tank, 8spd auto. 10,200# towing capacity.

The payload is your limiting factor, mine is 4wd 4 door (not the crew cab, the slightly smaller) 6' bed. Payload is a shade over 1300#. With a 6000# TT you'll likely have 700-800# tongue weight.. and 100# or so of WD hitch. With my specific truck that'd leave around 500# for me, my wife, our stuff, firewood, water, etc.....

If you're okay risking going over the payload, or pack really light might be fine. The engine is strong, and the 8spd makes for some nice towing.

Personally for a TT that big, I'd go with a 3/4 ton.. and if you travel a lot.. diesel.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Rams generally have one of the lower payload ratings. Your 6,000 pound trailer would use around 700 pounds of that payload at the tongue.

I am not saying you need a 3/4 ton, but be sure to look at the payload stickers of the models you are going to look at.

I have the 8 speed trans in my Challenger and it is the greatest. Guys drag race these things and beat the heck out of them every weekend and they just ask for more.
I would be thrilled to have it in a truck.
